SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊWhen the basketball left Tisha Rowland's hands with 2.0 seconds left in the fourth quarter, everyone in the gym knew it would sail through the net to give Whitko a 42-41 lead over Warsaw.

"When I saw the ball on the way out of her hands, I knew it was going in," said Whitko coach Ray Davis.

With 2.0 seconds on the clock, Warsaw inbounded the ball with a cross-court pass to Katie Elliott, who tossed a shot toward the goal as the buzzer sounded.

As the ball bounced off the rim, Whitko celebrated its first win over Warsaw since 1982, and just the second win over the Tigers in school history, 42-41.

After one quarter of play, the Tigers held a slim 11-9 lead, but the Wildcats tied the score at 11 just one minute into the second frame.

Warsaw then took an 18-11 lead with nearly four minutes left in the half.

Near the end of the first half, Whitko started a run that extended through the end of the half. In the last 3:41 of the second, Whitko outscored Warsaw 8-3 to go into the halftime break just two points behind the Tigers, 21-19.

Although the Wildcats kept Elliott scoreless through the first half, Jenna Rooney stepped up and pitched in three baskets for six points and Kara Kesler pitched in two baskets for four first-half points.

The third quarter saw more turnovers than baskets as each team scored just six points in the frame. Going into the final frame, Warsaw still held a two-point lead over Whitko, 27-25.

Sara Parker gave the Tigers a needed spark in the beginning of the fourth quarter as she scored four of Warsaw's first eight points to help the Tigers build a 35-27 lead over the Wildcats.

Whitko was down but not out, however, as BrieAnn Starkweather scored eight points in the first 3:29 to bring Whitko back to within three points of the Tigers, 36-33.

Warsaw held a three- to five-point lead for the next four minutes until Starkweather netted a two-point shot under the basket to bring Whitko within one, 40-39, with 11.5 seconds left in regulation play.

With 10 seconds remaining, Elliott hit the first shot of a double bonus to increase the Tiger lead to two, 41-39.

Whitko moved the ball down the court in a fast break setup, and Tisha Rowland got the ball behind the three-point line and lofted a shot toward the basket.

The basket sailed through the net, and the Wildcats held their first lead of the second half, 42-41, with 2.0 seconds on the clock.

"Everyone in the gym knew that ball was going in when she shot it," said Will Wienhorst.

"I told the girls we didn't need the three, and I honestly don't think Tisha (Rowland) even knew where she was on the court," said Davis. "She just caught the ball and shot with the flow of the play, and that's how she shoots best."

After the last shot by Warsaw ricocheted off the rim, Whitko held its first win over Warsaw in 16 years.

BrieAnn Starkweather scored 14 of Whitko's 17 fourth-quarter points on her way to a total of 24. Starkweather also scored her ninth double-double of the season by pulling down 10 rebounds in the Whitko victory.

"Tonight Starkweather proved that she is one of the best post players in the area," said Davis. "She proved it against (Jessica) Hicks at Manchester and she proved here it against Elliott tonight."

"Whitko just outplayed us," said Wienhorst. "We should have won this game, but the way they played, they deserved it.

"When we play like this, anybody can beat us," said Wienhorst. "We were not mentally and physically in this game tonight.

"This is a team loss, and we'll just have to pick it up in practice tomorrow and move on."

"This was a huge win for our program," said Davis. "This could very well catapult us through the rest of the season. We'll just need to think of every team we play from here on out as Warsaw. We didn't let them intimidate us, and we treated them like any other team we've played.

"I'll probably watch the tape 15 times. I know I won't be able to sleep."
