SOUTH WHITLEY - "We are not really as bad off as some schools, but we are not as good as some," said Whitko Business Manager Phil Menzie.

Monday night at the Whitko Community School Board meeting, Menzie updated the board on the status of the school corporation's budget.

"I think with what we did last year ... we are better off than if we didn't take those measures," said Menzie.

With retirements this year, some current staff members will be teaching at different schools, but no cuts will have to be made.

Menzie told the board that the school will receive 0.5 percent new money from the state this year, but the 2006 budget shows a 1 percent drop in funding, which will amount to about $100,000. The next year, a projected increase of 0.2 percent was calculated, adding about $16,000 to the school's funds.

"Hopefully someday we will be able talk about education instead of money," said board president Dave Tranter.

In other business, the board:

• Heard a presentation on the Edline pilot computer program. Whitko Director of Informational Services Joel Yeager demonstrated the online program to the board, highlighting the fact that parents who participate can get updates on their children's progress online and communicate with teachers via e-mail.

• Heard that Whitko High School entered the IMSTEA Super Mileage Challenge. Students build two cars for the competition at Indianapolis Raceway Park sponsored by Purdue University and Vincennes University.

• Heard Marlene Mishler speak for the Whitko Soccer Club about questions parents and athletes had for the board. The group will schedule a meeting with administrators to discuss the issue further.

• Heard presentations from South Whitley Elementary School choir and Mrs. Vicky Sprunger's second grade class.

• Heard a summary of Mike Sands' trip to the Indiana State Transportation Conference last month.

• Approved the retirement of John Hartup, social studies teacher, WHS; the resignation of Phil Cox, resource teacher, WHS; and the discontinuance of Kathy Mathias, assistant head cook, WMS.

• Approved the following transfers: Chad Hormann from sixth grade at WMS to third grade at SWES; Charles Snyder from sixth grade teacher at WMS to fifth grade at Pierceton Elementary School; Kris Cassady from counselor at WMS to elementary counselor; and Tammy Datzman, WHS resource teacher to SWES resource teacher.

• Approved the hiring of Renee Enyeart and Troy Mann, summer grounds workers; and Michelle Badskey, cook at PES.

• Approved substitutes for the 2004-2005 school year.

• Approved grants from DEKKO Foundation ($2,607 for music enhancement partnership) and Corporation for Educational Technology ($1,000 for the buddy program for Breakfast and Books at PES).

• Approved resolutions for tax anticipation warrants and authorizing contracts for residential placement.

• Approved textbook adoption for SWES and PES.

• Approved Strategies and Continuous School Improvement and Achievement Plan.

• Approved using $814.60 from an old bond fund to make improvements at the WHS baseball diamond. Whitko will host the sectional this year and upgrades are needed.
