SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊFriday night was senior night at Whitko High School, and the Wildcats were looking for a win over NorthWood. However, despite a hard-fought game the Whitko squad was unable to outlast the Panthers and fell 82-80 in overtime.

NorthWood started the first quarter by taking a 4-0 lead after Ryne Lightfoot and Josh Sabo hit back-to-back baskets.

Then at the 6:47 mark, Whitko senior Derrick Day split the net with a three-pointer, and streams of toilet paper flowed from the stands, as is tradition when the first Wildcat basket is scored on senior night.

But Day's trey was followed by two more NorthWood baskets, making the score 8-3 Panthers.

A three-pointer by Tim Stoffel at the 5:41 point sparked the Wildcat crowd and cut Northwood's lead to two, 8-6.

Four minutes later, a three-pointer by Day put Whitko within one, 14-13. Lightfoot answered with his own basket, putting NorthWood up 16-13.

Aaron Wendel and Day hit back-to-back baskets to give Whitko its first lead of the contest, 17-16 with just 10.6 ticks left on the clock.

But a bucket by Trevor Shields two seconds later gave NorthWood a 18-17 lead going into the second frame.

That lead was short-lived as Day put the Wildcats back on top with a basket to open the second quarter.

The Wildcats and Panthers traded baskets for much of the second stanza, with neither team taking a lead of more than three points.

At the end of the second frame, the teams were basically where they started, in a tie, only this time the score was 32-all.

Wildcat senior Jeremy Coble netted the first basket of the third frame to give Whitko a 34-32 advantage, but Sabo came through for NorthWood, making the score 34-all in the fourth tie of the evening.

After the teams both scored again, the score was tied at 36; however, a three-pointer by Coble gave the Wildcats a lead they held until the waning seconds of the third quarter.

At the 3:32 mark, Day hit a basket to start a 6-0 Wildcat run and put Whitko up 48-40. But the Panthers refused to give in.

Two free throws by Zac Lechlitner, followed by a Lightfoot three-pointer quickly put NorthWood back in the hunt, 48-45.

In the final 1:40 of the third quarter, the Panthers outscored the Wildcats 6-2 to take a 51-50 lead into the fourth frame.

Day and Wendel opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back baskets to put the Wildcats up 54-51.

Whitko held the lead through the majority of the fourth quarter until a Lightfoot basket at the buzzer knotted the score at 72-all and forced an overtime period.

The overtime period went to Northwood as the Panthers outscored the Wildcats 10-8 to pick up the 82-80 won.

In a senior night game that saw 16 lead changes and six ties, Whitko had three players, all seniors, score in double figures. Day led the Wildcats with 25 points, while Coble added 24 and Stoffel chipped in 11. Noah Shepherd, the fourth Wildcat senior, scored eight points. Aaron Wendel and Dan Rupley rounded out Whitko's scoring with seven and five points each.

NorthWood's Lightfoot led all scorers with 37 points, while Scott Mast added 16 and Sabo had 13 points.

The win moves NorthWood's record to 14-6 overall, while Whitko falls to 8-12. The Wildcats head to Wayne High School where they will face off against No. 1 Tippecanoe Valley in the opening round of the sectional Tuesday. NorthWood hosts the sectional and will face Northridge in the opening game Tuesday.
