Whitko Eyes 'Pay To Play'

PIERCETON - Student athletes at Whitko Community Schools may soon have to pay a fee to participate in sports.

At Monday's regular meeting of the Whitko Community Schools Board of Trustees, Superintendent Dr. Steve Clason said that the "pay to play" option is still on the table as a possible budget reduction item.[[In-content Ad]]In the latest incarnation of the scenario, the school corporation would charge a flat fee for students to participate in sports. At the high school level, students who play sports would pay around $80 to participate. The fee would not increase if a students plays more than one sport. The fee would be different at the middle and elementary school levels.

Clason said the proposal would probably be presented at the board's next meeting May 17.

Also, Clason told the board that four teachers have applied for the early retirement options being offered by the school corporation. Diane Begley, who is on of those four, has been approved and will retire at the end of the 2009-10 school year.

In other business, the board:

n Heard about the Good Beginnings Preschool for special needs children ages 3 to 5. The preschool is housed at the Pierceton Elementary School and currently serves nine students.

n Accepted the resignations of Kimberly Mobley Hackworth, school psychologist; Kay Gilson, Sunshine Sponsor; and Jami Davis, resource assistant at PES.

n Heard that the following people will not be returning for the 2010-11 school year: Jody Senseny, resource assistant at WMS; Priscilla Brandenburg, resource assistant at Whitko Middle School; Deanna Eberly, assistant track coach at WMS; Tina Kessie, JV cheerleading coach at Whitko High School; Dawn Wilkinson, varsity cheerleading coach at WHS; and Matt Koontz, varsity wrestling coach at WHS.

n Approved the adoption of math textbooks selected by committees at the schools up to grade nine. Adoption of books for grades 9-12 was postponed until the state decides on what math curriculum will be in high schools in the future.

n Approved a motion to keep meal prices the same in 2010-11.

n Approved the adoption of the 2010-11 school calendar. The first day for students will be Aug. 19 with a week for spring break, two weeks for Christmas break and the last day for students June 3, 2011.
