Whitko Boys Fall To North Miami

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

PERU - After winning five-straight games, Whitko's varsity boys basketball team has now lost its last three.

In the consolation game of the Miami County Tournament Wednesday at Peru High School, Whitko (5-5) fell 50-46 to the North Miami Warriors (7-2) after losing 65-43 to the Class 3A No. 6 Peru Tigers Tuesday in the first round of the tournament.[[In-content Ad]]"We're playing better now," Whitko coach Rob Irwin said about the state of his team compared to earlier in the season when it started 0-2. "We played really well (Tuesday). (The score) was at seven with under three minutes to go. If we lost by seven or 17, I decided I didn't care so we began trapping them. Today, it just came down to making shots."

North Miami hit 50 percent (23 for 46) of its shots, while Whitko connected on 25 of its 64 attempts.

Whitko sophomore Logan Irwin was the game's high scorer with 28 points, but it took 30 shots to get there, while junior teammate Zac VanDeWater scored 13. However, Whitko's next highest score was Max Elder with four points.

"Their role guys hit shots, and our role guys didn't hit shots," Irwin said. "Logan got his and Zac is getting into the 13-, 15-point range now. We need one of the other guys to step up."

The game was tight throughout, with Whitko's largest lead getting to 19-11 in the first quarter and North Miami's largest lead being 47-39 at the end of the third quarter.

After Whitko missed its first six three-pointers in the fourth quarter, Logan Irwin hit back-to-back treys at the 2:55 and 2:17 marks to give Whitko a 54-53 lead, but North Miami senior Skyler Duncan responded with a three-pointer of his own, retaking the lead for the Warriors at 56-54 with 2:01 to play.

Logan Irwin scored again to tie the game at 56-56, but those were Whitko's last points, as the Warriors hung on to win the game with a bucket by senior Greg Miller and two free throws with 5.4 seconds by Duncan.

Duncan's free throws were two of 12 free throws shot on the night, with Whitko only shooting two all night, and Logan Irwin failing to get to the line despite averaging 10 a game.

"I hope at our place, we shoot a few free throws," Irwin said about the Feb. 6 rematch with North Miami at Whitko. "(It's odd) when Logan goes through a game without shooting a free throw - as much as he's in the lane and getting banged around."

Logan Irwin's biggest obstacle in the lane was the 6-foot-5 Miller, who finished the game with 18 points and 19 rebounds.

"He's so much bigger and stronger," Irwin said about the Grace College-bound Miller. "I would guess that's probably the best he's been played all year. I thought Alex (Stoddard), a freshman on a senior, did a great job. Colin (Donner) also did a good job when he was in there on him. I thought we were blocking him out, but he just manhandled us a couple times.

Whitko will look to bounce back from the loss when it plays at Manchester Saturday at 6:15 p.m. in a Three Rivers Conference game.
