SOUTH BEND - The All-Area girls basketball team blistered South Bend's All-Metro team 86-58 Thursday night.

The South Bend Tribune All-Star basketball game was held at the Notre Dame Joyce Center. The Area team comprised 13 girls from 60 schools outside of South Bend.

A 16-0 run midway through the first half - it was a 20-minute half - sent the Area team on its way to the win. The lead went from 14-10 to 30-10 as the Area team dominated inside. Twelve of the 16 points came in the paint.

NorthWood 5-foot-11 senior forward A.J. Whitehead, selected the Area MVP for the game, scored six during the run. Valparaiso 6-0 senior forward Megan Parker also added six.

Whitehead finished with 21 points and nine rebounds, and Parker tallied 15 points and 13 rebounds.

But arguably no one had as much fun as Carly Beer. The 5-foot-4 Wawasee senior guard finished with two points, three assists, three rebounds.

When she stepped out into the hallway after the game, she was still pumped. She waved her arms and gestured with her hands when she talked.

She probably had enough energy left to play two.

"How about it," she said. "This was great. It was a blast. If you were open for just a split second, I was going to get you the ball.

"What did I have, two points? It doesn't matter. We won."

Playing along with Beer on the Area team was Triton 5-foot-4 guard Rachael Yeiter. She chipped in three points, three assists and two rebounds.

"It was exciting," Yeiter said. "The girls are fun to be around, and it's fun to meet new people. If I didn't score, that was fine with me. I just had fun."

South Bend Clay's Alberta Griffin, a 5-10 senior forward, was named Metro's game MVP. She scored 16 points and had three rebounds and two steals.

Beer finished her senior year averaging 13.9 points, 2.2 steals and 2.2 assists per game. She hit 40 percent of her three-point attempts. Yeiter, who will play college basketball at Lakeland College, gave Triton 13.1 points, 3.3 assists and 2.6 steals per game.

Beer started, but she was happy just to have been selected by the coaches.

"It's an honor to be chosen to play on a team like this with these types of players," Beer said. "When I look at area players who didn't get chosen, and I look at the caliber of player they are, this makes me feel good." [[In-content Ad]]
