Wheel Tax

Since this is the first of 20 years of paying the new wheel tax, I have one question. Since I couldn’t get an answer at the local BMV office and it’s impossible to talk to a human at the state BMV, I will direct my question to one of the five county commissioners who voted for this tax, those being Robert Sanders, Jon Garber, Jim Moyer, Brad Tandy and Larry Teghtmeyer. As a side note, I would like to add that Doug Heinisch was absent for this vote and Jon Fussle opposed it.
We want to know why we were charged a $40 wheel tax on an 8-foot two-wheel utility trailer with no enclosure? Even a car or pickup truck is less than that, being $25. This is the same as charged for a semi-trailer. Did you forget to impose a tax for a utility trailer because it certainly isn’t included in your smaller vehicle category, or is this another overcharge from our BMV who can’t seem to get their charges straight? I am betting who will be blamed for this, but I have the entire ordinance in front of me from our commissioners that pretty much clarifies who is at fault.

Editor’s note: Under Indiana law, counties may charge a surtax to be paid annually at registration time which applies to automobiles, motorcycles and trucks under 11,000 pounds. It can either be a percentage or a flat fee with a maximum of $25. The $25 flat fee was established in Kosciusko County. The wheel tax applies to all other vehicle types and trailers and can range from $5 to $40. In Kosciusko, all categories are $40.[[In-content Ad]]
