What's Racist?

Editor, Times-Union:

It is my belief that Senator Nancy Pelosi, former President Jimmy Carter, and others who are claiming the anger in America is of a "racist" origin: Not so my dears. I believe that these people are trying to divert our attention to avoid solving the real problems that plague America.

Our economic problems began before NAFTA, but NAFTA was a tremendous cause of the economy we have today. NAFTA should have been properly scrutinized before being signed. It is my opinion that stipulations for corporations to be allowed to send no more than 50 percent of the labor force jobs off American soil.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, we have seen our unemployment grow in numbers daily. People have gotten laid off, never returning to their level of income when acquiring new employment. People began to lose in the stock markets, their retirements and some of their life savings. (What's with that?) The Welfare rolls have increased at a phenomenal rate, some on temporarily due to loss of jobs. Most have been there for generations because people have learned how to be lazy and take advantage of "entitlements" tossed around by the government (that's another letter).

Banks, financial institutions, and auto makers get in trouble as a result of their greed and mismanagement. What does Washington do? Throw money at it.

Then there came the "Stimulus Programs." None of those benefited my family. I don't know if I am an average American or not. I didn't qualify for the $8,000 for a new home because I am not a "first-time homebuyer." I didn't qualify for the $4,500 for a more fuel efficient automobile because my 12-year-old clunker "is an economy car." I don't know the reason I did not qualify for a "stimulus" check that were sent out in the spring and I have no hopes of getting one in the future.

Next, the credit card companies Washington bailed out with our tax dollars, turns around and says thank you by doubling our interest rates and or doubles our monthly payments.

So, Senator Pelosi, former President Carter, we are not "racists." Most Americans don't care what color our president is. As for me, President Obama gets the same respect I have given other presidents in the past. He is our commander-in-chief. He has my respect, even if I don't agree with his ideas and actions.

In closing, the only way we are going to get any changes for the better is if we do it ourselves. The only freedoms we have left are speech and voting. It is time for us to stop voting for the same "old fogies" who either throw our money to programs that don't work and or put it in their pockets. I put them in the category of thieves. Personally, I am tired of having people in our office who think it is their mission in life to "die in office" after 50-plus years of service (25 of those spent sleeping through important sessions). I am for term limits for all government employees to no more than 20 years, period. Let them look for another job doing something they did not inherit or get an education for.

Serving the people of America is a privilege, not a birthright. They should try to start over like the rest of us.
