Well-Rounded Effort Leads To Viking Win

AKRON - A coach who for 30-plus years has run the wheel offense, Bill Patrick got a well-rounded effort from his Tippecanoe Valley varsity boys basketball team Tuesday evening.
An efficient offense that produced three double-figure scorers and a stifling defense that left Plymouth flat in the second half drove the Vikings to a 67-52 win.
The host Vikings trailed 26-22 midway through the second quarter, but a rebound basket by 6-foot-2 junior Shane Denny sparked a 13-1 run that gave Valley an eight-point lead with 1:31 remaining in the half.
Behind junior scoring juggernaut Kyle Benge, the Pilgrims came back, cutting the lead to four with 42 seconds left in the second stanza before Viking senior Cory Vanlaningham made a steal and bucket with three ticks remaining for a 37-31.
Benge burnt the nets for 19 points in the first half, scoring Plymouth's first 10 points of the game.
In the second half, however, the wheels fell off the Plymouth wagon.
"We finally got through to the kids at halftime that we had to face guard him," said Patrick of Benge. "We had to deny him the ball. Once he gets the ball he's so good at penetrating and passing."
Benge did little of both in the second half with Vikings Jeff Parker and John Gibson draped all over him and was held to a 2-of-10 performance from the field in the third and fourth quarters.
Benge finished the game with 25 points on 7-of-19 shooting and was 9 of 9 from the free throw line.
While Benge's offense stole the show in the first half, it was Valley's Vanlaningham, David Lash and Shane Drudge that starred when they needed to in the second half.
The trio combined for 26 second-half points, while Benge was held to six.
Vanlaningham finished the game with 18 points, while Lash had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Drudge had 15 points.
Lash scored his 16 points by going 6 of 6 from the field and 4 of 4 at the line, while Drudge made his first six shots and finished 7 of 9 from the field and 1 of 2 from the charity stripe.
Both are sophomores.
"Lash didn't play that well in the first half," said Patrick. "In the second half we moved him out. We had him guarding Benge in the first half and that took him out of his game (offensively)."
Shane Denny added eight for Valley, while Josh Murphy and Parker added four each.
"We got good play out of nine kids tonight," said Patrick. "The first game we didn't play well. The second game I thought we played pretty well. The third game we played better, and tonight I thought we played even better. We've gotten better all four games. We could use another outside shooter but overall the kids compliment each other and understand what to do."
The Vikings led 49-41 at the end of the third quarter, and then started the fourth with a three-point play by Lash. Valley led by as much as 16 in the final frame when Vanlaningham drilled a three-pointer with 1:19 left for a 65-49 lead.
To go with Benge's game-high 25, the Pilgrims got nine from Scott Michel and seven from Kyle Wallace.
The win improved Valley to 4-0 and was the 567th of Patrick's 35-year career, while Plymouth fell to 3-1. Pilgrim coach Jack Edison has 464 wins and is in his 31st year of coaching.
The Vikings are in action again Saturday when they host John Glenn.
