Webster Post Office Takes Another Look At Old School
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
NORTH WEBSTER - The elementary school building is again an option for a relocated post office because costs to create access to the old motel off Ind. 13 are a bit salty, according to Bob Murphy of R.P. Murphy and Associates.
Murphy updated town council members Kay Andrews, Ken Wagner and Jeff Morgan regarding uses for the school, which will be abandoned by the Wawasee School Corp. as an educational facility in December 2002.
Murphy said figures to improve the highway and ingress to the motel for the post office came in at $100,000. The post office must leave its current location by October 2002.
A USPO presence at the school on the property would be a keystone in securing funds and ensuring the building's future in serving the community.
Murphy said most of the organizations he's talked to are interested in the new addition of the school. He has communicated with the Lakeland Youth Center, YMCA, a day care practice and the North Webster-Tippecanoe Township Library board.
He advised that a senior citizens' organization be formed for people age 62 and older if such a center was to be part of the building.
Moving town departments to the building also was discussed.
In other business the board:
• Signed a lease, with option to buy 10 acres of land owned by Norbert and Donna Niles for use by the wastewater treatment plant. Final approval is subject to IDEM review. Cost for the 10 acres is about $100,000 and payments will be made in three installments. The property is west of Ind. 13 off Syracuse-Webster Road.
• Reviewed architect Jim McCleary's North Webster Town Park design showing the proposed pier and parking lot.
• Approved an addendum to the Lakeview Restaurant lease contract with Pure Pleasure Inc. increasing the rent by $200 per month to cover installation of an air conditioning unit.
• Approved hanging a banner for the Wawasee Area Swim Club from Aug. 27 through Sept. 10.
• Set a public hearing for review of the town budget at 5 p.m. Sept. 5 with a meeting for final approval at 5 p.m. Sept. 17.
The next regular meeting of the town council will be Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. in council chambers at the town hall. [[In-content Ad]]
