NORTH WEBSTER - Town council members finished 2001 business Wednesday with financial transactions to balance accounts and by approving the salary ordinance for 2002.

Town council members receive $3,000 per year with an additional $500 for the council president; the clerk-treasurer's salary was set at $32,860; town marshal at $40,000; deputy marshal at $28,450; street crossing guard at $18 per day; public works supervisor at $42,330; assistant to the supervisor, $29,000; public works employees receive a minimum of $8 an hour, with the clerk-treasurer's assistant receiving a minimum of $7. Park board members receive $250 per year.

Bob Murphy of R.P. Murphy and Associates said he would have the report ready Jan. 7 regarding the North Webster Elementary School.

Murphy said he would have insurance and demolition figures at that time, as well as where the money to fund the project will come from.

In October 1999 the Wawasee School Corp. announced construction of a new elementary school and their intention to abandon the building on Ind. 13 by January 2002.

Since then, plans have been made to move town offices to the facility and several groups have expressed an interest in using the building, including the Lakeland Youth Center, the YMCA and the North Webster - Tippecanoe Township Library.

Despite months of negotiation in executive sessions, not open to the public, the school's corporation has not made a formal proposal regarding transfer of the property.

Murphy also advised a change in architectural services from Jim McCleary to Scearce Rudisel Architects Inc., both of Winona Lake, for the park's fishing pier design. Murphy said the contract reads the architect will be paid when the Department of Natural Resources approves a pier design. So far McCleary's designs have been returned unapproved.

"We don't have a pier design yet," Murphy said. "I think that's unfair to the town."

An $18,415 grant already has been secured for pier construction and the parking lot.

The council took the suggestion under advisement.

Council members Kay Andrews, Jeff Morgan and Ken Wagoner also changed meeting times to 6 p.m. The second Wednesday of each month are the regularly scheduled meetings unless that day falls on the 10th of the month or earlier, then meetings are changed to the third Wednesday. [[In-content Ad]]
