NORTH WEBSTER - Although construction dust coats the floors now, and tools, power equipment and buckets line the hallways, the North Webster Community Center will be ready for occupancy by March 1.

"The library, Lakeland Youth Center and Kosciusko Community YMCA will be ready with programs opening day," said NWCC Executive Secretary Lynn Stevens.

Between March 1 and the grand opening May 2, tours of the facility will be announced.

A concession stand has been created inside the main (Ind. 13) entrance. Ironically, in a building where chewing gum wasn't allowed, soft drinks and snacks will be sold to hungry kids coming off the gym floor.

The main entrance will be shifted to the east side of the building, where an ample parking space is planned. A metal awning is already in place to greet visitors there.

The North Webster Tippecanoe Township Library will occupy the north end of the building. A senior center is planned for the east side of the building along with the town hall offices.

"We're opening at 5:30 a.m. March 1," said Tom Garland, executive director of the YMCA. "I'll be there with coffee in hand."

The Y has four rooms for free weights, a fitness center with Koehinger Fitness equipment, an aerobics room and a babysitting room available during certain hours as a free service to members.

Garland said the K21 Foundation grant covered the Koehinger equipment.

In addition to aerobics, there will be step aerobics, weight training and yoga classes.

"We're keeping it simple for now and will be adding more as we go," Garland said.

The Lakeland Youth Center and the YMCA will share the gymnasium.

North Webster Y memberships will be for sale at the YMCA in Warsaw beginning Monday. Anyone with a current membership can use both facilities.

Offices for Lakeland Youth Center and the YMCA are on the former elementary school's east side, outfitted with windows to overlook the gym.

On the gym's south side, above the bleachers, a wall has been removed to make an open loft. The Milford/North Webster/Syracuse Little Leagues have formed a coalition to use the space as a baseball/softball training facility.

In addition to the cafeteria, which will hold about 200 people, there are four smaller meeting rooms available for lease.

The old school kitchen will become more user-friendly while keeping the walk-in refrigerators.

"We expect most events to be catered," Stevens said.

The "old" part of the building, the section to the south, may be saved from the wrecking ball. Stevens said several parties are interested in that end of the building.

Parking along Ind. 13 will be closed by March 1 and the Ind. 13 entrance will be used for fire emergencies only. [[In-content Ad]]
