We The People

At the risk of being labeled as a serial letter writer (like some of the people who write to the paper) since my last letter was two weeks ago, I must write to say that Gary Gerard's opinion article on Sept. 19 was spot on.
Some people think that the federal government is actually listening to the people that they represent. But what no one realizes is that Congress has not listened to the people for years. They listen to special interest groups and corporate lobbyists and those groups are saying what they believe the people think, even though it is probably the opposite of what the people think.
No one has ever received a call from a lobbyist asking for our opinion on an issue that they represent. This country was founded as a republic where the people are ultimately supposed to be in charge. However, somewhere along the way, groups of people gathered around and decided to lobby Congress on a particular issue and when Congress asked those lobbyists, "Do our constituents believe the same as you do?" Of course, the lobbyists said, "Uh yeah sure, why not," (whether it is actually true is irrelevant).
And with each passing Congress, this painful display of stupidity is repeated over and over to the point where Congress is really pandering to a different set of lobbyists and special interests groups with each new Congress.
The time is now for Americans to stand up and begin the process of taking back this country. Now some of you may think about looking for your pitchforks, looking for a good old fashioned torch branch, or rigging together a set of electroshock probes. While all seem like a great idea, they aren't really necessary. What we need to do is pester our Congressmen to pass H.R. 25 - the Fair Tax Act. With this one piece of legislation:
n increases the amount of people paying a tax into the system.
n Federal income taxes are gone (as well as most other forms of Federal Taxation).
n Closes all federal tax code loopholes and brings a fairness to taxation.
n brings up to $11 trillion that Americans and American companies hold in foreign lower tax paying banks back to the United States.
n ensures Social Security and Medicare funding.
n brings much needed accountability and transparency in our tax policy.
The only lobbyist group that the Fair Tax benefits is the American people. The Fair Tax gives Americans more flexible income for use in purchasing goods or for saving for retirement. The Fair Tax gives American companies more money for reinvestment in their companies.
The Fair tax brings about accountability and responsibility to the American Government as we have the final say on matters through the voting booth rather than lobbyists and special interests groups telling Congress what to do.
Remember the first words of the Constitution, "We the People..."
But get your pitchforks and torches just in case.
