Before the Warsaw School Board approves the 2009-2010 school year calendar at its March 23 meeting, the public will have a chance to comment on it.

Monday at 7 p.m. at the central administration office, a public meeting will be held for patrons to look over and give feedback on the calendar, according to Assistant to the Superintendent Chris Gensinger.

For the 2009-2010 proposed calendar, the first student day is scheduled as Aug. 14. Fall break is Oct. 22-23, and Thanksgiving break is Nov. 26-27.[[In-content Ad]]Christmas break under the proposed calendar is Dec. 21 through Jan. 1. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 18 and Presidents Day on Feb. 15 will be treated as holidays and not snow make-up days. Spring break is proposed as April 5-9, with the last student day tentatively scheduled as June 1 and Warsaw Community High School graduation as June 11.

However, Gensinger said graduation day is still up in the air. That could be moved back to June 4, unless there are too many make-up days because of cancelled school days due to snow.

Several snow make-up days are built into the proposed calendar. Those days are Feb. 16, March 26 and May 10.

There is very little information about how the federal stimulus program will affect schools, WCS Chief Financial Officer Kevin Scott told the board Monday at the board's regular monthly meeting.

Scott said he has not seen any details.

"At this point, hold your calls because I don't have any information other than what you've read in the newspapers," he said.

In the past month, the number of students in Warsaw Community Schools has dropped by 28, according to Gensinger.

He reported WCS has 6,909 students. There are 3,809 in the elementary schools; 1,984 at the high school; 557 at Edgewood Middle School; and 559 at Lakeview Middle School.
