WCS Gets Thumbs Up For Progress On Strategic Plan

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

WINONA LAKE – Five years ago Warsaw Schools started working on a strategic plan.
In February 2012, the school board formally adopted the plan created by the Core Planning team, led by consultant Dr. Steve Barone. It includes a mission statement, core values, strategies, strategic objectives and delimiters.
Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Core Planning team met at the Russell Center in Winona Lake to assess what’s been done to meet the mission statement and what will be done to continue to work toward meeting it.
In a short interview during the session, Barone said a big part of the strategic plan is the mission statement.
WCS’s statement reads, “Our mission is to inspire and equip all students to continuously acquire and apply knowledge and skills while pursuing their dreams and enriching the lives of others.”
Barone said it may take WCS 10 years to achieve the mission statement, but the objectives have dates to meet. Through the Core Planning team’s meetings, they can gauge what kind of progress they’re making toward meeting their goals.
He said WCS is doing “very, very well” toward implementing its strategic plan and they’re “very focused.” The formal leaders, as well as the informal leaders, are very committed to the plan.
In working in over 50 countries, WCS consistently and intentionally is in the top 5 percent of those he works with, he said. He attributed that to everyone from the school board on down being committed and involved with the strategic plan.
He also praised WCS for hiring its next superintendent from within. By doing so, the new superintendent won’t have to be brought up to speed on the strategic plan or what the school corporation has done to meet its objectives.
In January Superintendent Dr. Craig Hintz announced his retirement effective June 30. The school board has announced Assistant Superintendent David Hoffert will take over July 1.
