WCS Board Organizes, Makes Appointments

Deb Wiggins, Warsaw School Board president, welcomed the new members to the board Monday night, along with any new ideas they may have.

The school board met for the first time in 2011 to reorganize, approve appointments and set the days and times of the board meetings.

The re-elected and newly elected board members first had to be sworn in by attorney Michael Reed.

Reed swore in new members Matt Dick, Dan Metzger and Jennifer Tandy, and re-elected Delores Hearn.

The officers of the school board will remain the same for 2011 as 2010. Wiggins will continue as board president, with Dan Robinson as vice president and Hearn as secretary.

The board approved establishing the regular board meetings on the fourth Monday of each month beginning at 7 p.m., with the exception of the September and December meetings. The September meeting will be Sept. 19 and the December meeting will be Dec. 15.

The Resolution of the Board of School Trustees approved by the board did eight things. It appointed Erica Purvis as corporation treasurer; and appointed Lori Tilden as executive secretary to the board. The resolution stablished a copy fee of 10 cents per page for records, and appointed officers and members of the board of finance as the same as the officers and members of the school board. It also established compensation for the board as not to exceed $2,000 per year, and a per diem of $3,000 per year, for a total of $5,000 per year; and designated Lake City Bank as the cash management provider. It appointed Reed & Earhart Attorneys at Law as the board's attorney; and designated the Times-Union as the official newspaper for legal notices to the public.

In another resolution, the board appointed Jean Shively as the deputy treasurer of Warsaw Community Schools.

A motion approved the school board committees, but did not assign any board members to those committees because they may shift, according to Wiggins. The committees include calendar, curriculum council, discussion committee, facilities committee, finance committee, human resources, legislative liaison, marketing, policy committee, professional relations group, strategic planning, technology, wage/salary task force, wellness and Woodies Scholarship.

Four annual appointments were made to other governmental entities within the school community. Robinson was appointed as the Warsaw City Economic Development liaison, to the Kosciusko County Economic Development Council and the Warsaw Park Board. Sandy Carmichael, Warsaw Community High School teacher, was reappointed to the Warsaw Public Library Board.

The board set the evaluation dates for Hintz.

According to the approved evaluation dates, each board member will complete part one of the evaluation by April 15. Hintz will provide a written self-evaluation to the board by April 15. Board members will individually complete the superintendent evaluation form, part two, and submit it to Wiggins or designee by May 1. The board will discuss Hintz's evaluation by May 31. Finally, Wiggins will provide a summary of Hintz's evaluation to the public at the board's regular June meeting.

During board comments, Metzger thanked Wiggins and Robinson for being "extremely helpful in getting us new people caught up to speed. I appreciate the insight," he said.

Dick and Tandy also thanked the board for their help.

Board member Kent Adams said 2010 was an interesting year and 2011 looks to be as interesting. The economy continues to be a challenge. He commended Hintz, Chief Accountability Officer Tom Kline and Chief Financial Officer Kevin Scott for "what they're doing to keep us where we need to be. We look onward and upward and go from there."

Wiggins told the new board members they are now public officials. She said the board was open to any new ideas they may have, and she appreciated their willingness to share their thoughts. She also said the board worked to be transparent in its dealings.[[In-content Ad]]
