On Monday, the Warsaw School Board awarded contracts to furnish the schools. According to Chief Financial Officer Kevin Scott, the bids came in about a half million dollars less than the $3.5 million budgeted.
For $2,239,100, the school board awarded "Packages A, B and F" of the furniture and loose equipment project to Sharp School Services Inc. For $780,000, the school board awarded "Packages C, D and E" of the furniture and loose equipment project to Lee Company Inc.
In 2004, the school board closed Atwood, Silver Lake and Claypool elementary schools. Students were then assigned to attend one of the seven remaining opened schools, leading to overcrowding in the schools. In 2007, the new school board voted to open and renovate Claypool, renovate and expand Jefferson and build new Madison and Leesburg schools.
Warsaw Community Schools also is doing interior renovation of the existing technology department area within the lower level of the Central Instructional Materials Center, also known as the administration building. This will renovate the entire area to serve the new data center location and improve the technology department for their current and future needs.
Complete renovation and improvement of the space is being completed by Kovert Hawkins Architects, the architectural firm doing the elementary schools building project. The work is in response to previous approval to relocate the corporation's data center to this area, according to information provided.
The school board Monday awarded the contract for construction of the interior renovations of the technology department and data center to Robinson Construction Inc. for $124,466. School Board Vice President Dan Robinson abstained from the vote.
The board also awarded a purchase order for the furniture to equip the interior renovations of the technology department and data center to KI for $18,651.52.
For each of the renovated and new elementary schools, the school board approved playground equipment Monday.
The materials and installation of the playground equipment for the creation of two playgrounds at each of the elementary schools were included in the Leesburg, Madison and Claypool building projects. Much of the infrastructure of these playgrounds was included in the bid scope of the work.
Materials and installation of the playground equipment and the complete creation of three playgrounds at Jefferson Elementary were included in the current building project. However, no work at the area of the playgrounds was included in the bid scope of the work, as per concerns for the budget. The three playgrounds include a playground for grades kindergarten to second grade, third through sixth and severe special needs playgrounds.
To provide for the playgrounds, the school board approved three change orders, which resulted in an increase to the contract sum, but not to the project bond amount. For Claypool, the amount is $199,906. For Jefferson, the amount is $347,956. The Madison and Leesburg amount is $450,464.
Other change orders also were approved for the building projects, but they all were within the contingency allowance already in the contract sum bid price.
The change order for Claypool Elementary totaled $123,761. Twelve items were listed in the change order.
The change order for Jefferson totaled $210,616, and it included 17 items.
The change order for Madison and Leesburg included six items totaling $169,199.
Scott told the school board the budget order for Warsaw's 2010 budget was received Friday. It's due back this Friday, but needed school board approval. Scott said the general fund was reduced because of the state funding reductions, and there was a slight deduction to the debt service fund.
Deb Wiggins, school board president, made a motion for Superintendent Dr. Craig Hintz and the school board finance committee chair to review the budget order, sign it and send it back to state. The motion was approved.[[In-content Ad]]
