WINONA LAKE - Runners and walkers will get the chance to hit the trail to help local agencies fight hunger.

World Compassion Network will hold the Run/Walk for Hunger 5K on March 28 at 10 a.m. in Winona Lake.[[In-content Ad]]Headquartered in Warsaw, WCN responds to domestic and international disaster through local churches and alliances with other relief organizations; seeks to serve the underprivileged in local communities; and assists in leading short-term outreach teams for volunteers. WCN has responded to local disasters like the Nappanee tornado in 2007 and last year's flooding in Kosciusko County. The organization also helped with relief efforts during Hurricanes Ike, Katrina and Rita and international disasters including the cyclone in Myanmar last year.

WCN Disaster Relief Coordinator Clark Shepherd said the 5-kilometer race is an effort to get people involved in helping to meet needs in their local communities.

"We want to start really getting the message out there that the need is really in the community," Shepherd said.

Shepherd said WCN also wants to let people in need know help is available.

"We want people to see that they have hope in their local communities," he said. "There are people and agencies looking to help."

Shepherd said volunteers partnering with local agencies is often the best way to meet needs in a community. He said the 5K could be a first step for someone to get more involved in helping others.

"It's doing something for yourself as far as walking or running. But, it's also helping the community outside yourself," he said. "This could be a stepping stone for someone who wants to do something bigger, like volunteering with Combined Community Services or even starting their own race to raise funds to help those in need."

Registration cost for the race is $15 for those pre-registering before March 19. After March 19, the fee is $20. Shepherd said local sponsors have covered the costs of hosting the race, so 100 percent of the money raised through registration fees will go toward helping local agencies meet local needs.

"Everything that is being donated through registration fees is going into an account at WCN," he said.

Shepherd said money in the account is specifically designated to help overcome shortfalls in local food pantries and other needs of local service agencies.

Race-day registration will be held at the Winona Lake Senior Center, 8:30 - 9:45 a.m. T-shirts are guaranteed to pre-registered racers. After March 19, T-shirts will be available while supplies last. Awards will be given to the overall male and female winners as well as the top three finishers in each age group.

The race will begin and end at the Senior Center park pavilion in Winona Lake Park. The race course will follow sections of the Heritage Trail.
