Warsaw-based relief organization World Compassion Network is encouraging the community to participate in a flood-bucket effort to purchase needed supplies for Midwest flood victims.

Floods recently hit the Midwest in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Wisconsin.[[In-content Ad]]Several heavy rainfalls occurred across central Indiana during the first week of June south of Indianapolis, causing rivers and streams to rise, flooding homes and communities.

Organization volunteers will distribute buckets today through Wednesday at Owens, 2211 E. Center St., and Marsh Supermarket, 500 S. Buffalo St., Warsaw.

The collection efforts will continue through Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the locations.

Volunteers will distribute buckets from the organization's vehicles. Those who choose to participate in the efforts will receive a list of suggested items needed to be purchased.

Some of the items on the list include sponges, dish soap, laundry detergent, work gloves and trash bags.

"These items are the most needed to help flood victims with recovery efforts," according to Joe Wilkey, World Compassion Network executive director.

Wilkey founded the relief organization in 2002.

The items will be transported to the organization's warehouse in Silver Lake, where they will be sorted and sent to flood victims in southern Indiana, Illinois and Missouri.

Wilkey said this is not the first time flood relief efforts have taken place in Warsaw.

Efforts also took place in 2004 in Warsaw when residents collected items for Hurricane Jeanne victims.

Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins said he encourages people to purchase items for flood victims.

"It is important to reach out to other communities in this time of need," Wiggins said.

Wilkey said his goal is to have 500-700 buckets filled with items for flood victims.

People who can not make it to the flood bucket efforts and would like to donate financially can mail checks to: World Compassionate Network, P.O. Box 1152 Warsaw, IN 46581.

Checks should be designated WCN Flood Buckets.
