WCHS Students Help Leesburg Kids Get Fit

LEESBURG - Two Warsaw Community High School seniors are hoping that by getting Leesburg Elementary School students physically fit, they also will win at state competition.

Kylie Dishman and Megan Davis started an after-school fitness program at Leesburg Elementary for students in grades 1-6. It starts at 4 p.m. every Tuesday after school lets out. After each 1-1/2-hour session, the elementary students then get a snack. This is the third week of the program. Dishman and Davis started the program as their Family, Career and Community Leaders of America project.[[In-content Ad]]The first part of the program is divided into cardiovascular and endurance activities. The second half deals with coordination.

"We do games like tag, dodgeball with older kids. Green light/red light," said Dishman.

The activities also are divided by grades. While the fifth- and sixth-graders may be shooting hoops, the third- and fourth-graders run relay races. The first- and second-graders participate together. Each group starts with stretching and running a few laps.

Originally, said Dishman, they had planned to run their FCCLA project for four weeks. However, the program ended up being so successful, Dishman said they decided to keep it going. The first day of the program, Dishman said they thought they were going to have only 20 students participate. They peaked at 85 students so far.

"It was a big surprise," said Dishman.

Dishman and Davis will present the fitness program at state competition this weekend. Dishman said if they place, they then will go on to nationals this summer in Orlando, Fla.

Both Davis and Dishman are athletes, with Davis running track and Dishman being a golfer. With their schedules, Dishman said it seemed like it took forever to organize the fitness program. But after a month of preparations, she said they were able to get donations and the program together.

Dishman said they appreciated Jones' Food Center for donating the snacks, Owens for donating some money and Rabb/Kinetico Water Systems for donating the drinking water. Other high school students volunteer to help Davis and Dishman, Davis said.

"It's always crazy when it first starts," said Davis as the students entered the gym, ran around and got into their groups.
