As we ripped open the pack, our main focus was who we added to our collection. Rarely did we turn the card over to look at the analytical side.
Cory Albertson, however, found that the back of the card was where he spent his time. He connects his love for numbers, and his present endeavors, to the day his father took him into L & L Coins at the age of 5.
Twenty five years ago, Alberton’s love for numbers started, and today the passion continues.
Albertson, a 2002 Warsaw High School graduate, was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal about his success in the world of Daily Fantasy Sports.
DFS is a relatively new online sports game, where users select players for just one day instead of an entire season.
While fantasy football has boomed, the struggles of hanging with a baseball team for 162 games can be draining. Daily fantasy sports have been the answer for many sports fanatics, Albertson Included.
“It is some ways similar to stock trading,” Albertson said. “Instead of buying and selling stock, you are doing it with the statistical output of pro athletes.”
While stats and numbers came at an early age for Albertson, he continued to enjoy them throughout his days in the Warsaw Community Schools Corportation. He was a member of the Lincoln Lions basketball team and kept stats during his elementary days. He also found himself in the middle of the greatest statistical sport while at WCHS – he ran numbers and stats for the baseball team.
That was prior to his arrival at Ball State, where he found a passion for playing poker. Many remember the poker boom set off by Chris Moneymaker during the summer of 2003.
Albertson has also enjoyed his time in the spotlight of the poker world. Twice he has made deep runs in the Main Event, finishing 159th in 2008 and 133rd in 2011. Bear in mind, this was out of nearly 7,000 players.
His focus now is primarily on the daily fantasy football, as well as getting his MBA from Notre Dame next spring. As you can imagine, he’s got a full plate with very little spare time. So while you and I spend our spare time attending a sporting event or out playing golf, what does Albertson do?
“I’m training for the Chicago Triathlon in August,” said Albertson. “I really do anything I can to challenge my physical limits.”
That includes over 150 jumps out of airplanes. Once an avid skydiver, Albertson got the opportunity to open his chute again with his classmates at Notre Dame.
“It’s one of the nicer elements going back to get my MBA,” he said. “You’re immediately a part of a community of risk-tolerant people who enjoy getting out and trying new things.”
In both poker and DFS, Albertson would be considered an early entrant into an untapped market.
“We’re ahead of the game, both in an algorithmic sense, as well as financially,” said Albertson. “We’re able to invest several million dollars every year in these contests, achieving a return on this investment from the superior combinations of fantasy rosters we are entering daily.”
While playing daily games is enjoyable to Albertson, he also is co-owner to his own daily fantasy site.
Albertson, along with fellow Warsaw native Austin Arnett, and Ray Coburn have maintained a site that oversees hundreds of games per day. As a self proclaimed sports nerd that snuck into the library to change his lineups during school hours, Albertson has come full circle in his love for sports.
“It’s funny how these early identities tend to stay with us,” said Albertson. “I’m still doing a lot of the same things now, it’s just on more of an adult level with money involved.”[[In-content Ad]]
