More than 160 high school councils were named National Councils of Excellence. Warsaw Community High School is one of only 144 high school councils nationwide to receive the highly-esteemed honor of being named a National Gold Council of Excellence.
To meet the requirements for the National Council of Excellence award, a student council must demonstrate that it meets a variety of criteria. Those councils named to the Gold level have successfully met a greater number of the criterion. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings, a democratic election process and membership in NASC, schools that qualify for the award demonstrate such things as leadership training for council members, teacher/staff appreciation activities, student recognition programs, school and community service projects, spirit activities, goal setting, financial planning and active participation in their state and national student council associations.
"Receiving an NASC National Gold Council of Excellence Award indicates a dedication on the part of the local school to providing a strong, well-rounded student council program," said Jeff Sherrill, associate director of NASC. "NASC applauds the work of the National Gold Councils of Excellence and challenges them to continue their leadership and service to their schools and communities."
Jim LeMasters, junior/senior student council advisor, stated, "It is great to work with a group of students who are so dedicated to the role of leadership."
"This award is about the students who have committed themselves to growing as leaders. We are fortunate to have a dedicated group of students who are passionate about making a positive difference in our school and community," said Betsy Sudhoff, freshman/sophomore student council advisor.
Abbi Richcreek, junior/senior student council advisor, said, "This is exciting to see these young leaders perform to great heights within our community, state and nation."
Jennifer Shepherd, administrative advisor and assistant principal for class of 2012, said, "Our student council leaders and advisors do so much for our school that many people don't even realize. Dances, homecoming, spirit weeks, service projects, staff recognition and the list goes on and on of activities that this council completes yearly. This is a great way to recognize all of their hard work and long hours. We are very proud of all of them."
Troy Akers, principal of WCHS, also acknowledged the efforts of these young people.
He said, "Our council members strive for excellence has been demonstrated throughout the entire school year. They have gone far and above the established basic requirements for recognition consideration. This reward is richly deserved and the efforts of this group of students have made us all very proud. The time, effort and collaboration on projects were simply amazing. I would like to also thank the sponsors for modeling excellent leadership skills throughout the day to day interactions with council members. The beneficiaries of our student council's activities are our entire student body and the greater Warsaw community. Well done!"
The National Association of Student Councils (NASC) promotes and provides leadership development opportunities to prepare and empower students to serve their schools and communities. NASC is a program of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The NASSP also sponsors the National Honor Society and the National Junior Honor Society, which recognizes outstanding middle level and high school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character.
