Construction on the renovation and addition projects at Warsaw Community High School should begin this spring if the bidding process goes as expected.

The Warsaw school board was told Monday by the architect and construction manager for building projects that the drawings are complete and bid documents will be distributed the week of Dec. 8. Final bids will be opened Jan. 8, and construction is slated to begin around March 1, with an estimated completion date of September 2006.

According to architect Dean Ellingworth, the total project will include expanding the student parking lot to the southwest of the high school, adding varsity and practice softball fields to the south, building a football field and track with bleachers, adding a physical education classroom building, putting in two practice football fields along Ind. 15 in front of the school, building a road through the north parking lot, adding varsity and practice soccer fields, building a locker room for the soccer and tennis teams including a concession area, adding a weight and wrestling room to the west side of the building, expanding the cafeteria, adding the performing arts center, moving the band and choral areas and putting in a new public entry area with a security vestibule.

Plans also include upgrades in mechanical systems, fire alarms, heating and air conditioning, etc.

Estimates for all work come to $24,362,442, which will be funded primarily through the bonding process and supplemented with money from the capital projects fund.

Business manager Rande Thorpe said the total bond is $30 million, "which has already been sold and we have the proceeds."

Board member Jim Folk made a motion to receive bids, and Larry Chamberlain seconded the motion. Folk, Chamberlain and Mark Minatel voted in favor of the motion; Ron Yeiter and Gene England voted against it. Cathy Folk was acting board president in Craig Allebach's absence.

Yeiter said he was voting against the motion because of the elementary school situation and because the high school is being favored at the expense of the elementaries.

"We went from a vote of wants and ignored our needs," he said.

The board also:

• Approved wages for support personnel, which, according to superintendent Dr. Dave McGuire, included no across-the-board raises.

• Approved borrowing money from the Indiana Bond Bank to meet expenses until state allocations come in.

Board members are: Craig Allebach, Larry Chamberlain, Gene England, Cathy Folk, Jim Folk, Mark Minatel and Ron Yeiter. The board meets on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the administration building. [[In-content Ad]]
