Wayne Trustee Offers Service Program

Dan Slone, the Wayne Township trustee, has a new program for residents applying for rent or utility vouchers - community service with the Warsaw street, parks or Kosciusko County's Solid Waste Management District.
The trustee's office is a kind of last stop for financial aid because first-time applicants will be sent to charitable organizations, like Combined Community Services, the Salvation Army and Our Father's House, first.
"Everybody gets down on their luck," Slone said. "Community service makes many people feel better. This way they're not getting a hand out, they're earning it."
"We're going to help as we can," said Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins. "We definitely have things to do in the spring and the summer as far a general labor and maintenance. It depends on the situation."
"They will not be on the city payroll and Dan has the workman's compensation issue resolved."
Former Tippecanoe Township trustee Dick Mitchell works in the Wayne Township office part-time. He said he always required community service during his 24 years as trustee.
Earlier this month Joe Moyer, the Harrison Township Trustee, began instituting community service for township assistance, too. Slone said the township does not offer a food pantry but will help people on a special diet.
