He was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Wabash County, to Homer F. and Golda M. Nichols Johnson. On Aug. 29, 1941, in North Manchester, he married Mary K. Ahlfeld, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged Nov. 25, 1943, in Great Lakes, Ill. A lifetime Kosciusko County resident, he was an ordained minister in the Evangelical United Brethren and United Methodist churches, retiring in 1986. He served as pastor at United Methodist churches in at Burket, Claypool, Athens and Beaver Dam and served as an evangelist with the Evangelical United Brethren Church. He graduated from Chester High School in 1940, and received higher education from Manchester College and United Theological Seminary, Indianapolis. He was a past member of Claypool Lions Club, a former Clay Township trustee and former member and president of the Kosciusko County Community Hospital Board of Directors. He was an accomplished cabinet maker and an avid fisherman.
Also surviving are two sons, Jerry (and spouse Lois) Johnson, Claypool, and Stephen Johnson, Fort Wayne; two daughters, Janet D. (and spouse Charles) Lentz, Mount Pleasant, N.C., and Barbara (and spouse Michael) Wolfe, Mesa, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lewis E. and Robert L. Johnson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Claypool United Methodist Church, Claypool, officiated by Pastor Evelyn Taylor Haney of the church. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.
Calling is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
