SYRACUSE – Wawasee Athletic Director Steve Wiktorowski announced the promotion of assistant volleyball coach Kayla Riportella to the head coaching position.
Riportella served as an assistant coach on the staff last year after playing at Goshen College. She will also serve as a full time language arts teacher at the high school next year after having student taught there last fall. She is a 2012 graduate of Maine West High School north of Chicago.
"Kayla clearly distinguished herself in the interview process as a very mature and intelligent young coach with a strong background in the sport,” Wiktorowski said. “The hiring committee definitely felt she showed she is ready for this position.
“Having been an assistant here, she is already familiar with our players and it is always a real positive to have a head coach teach at our school. She has impressed many people in the short amount of time she has served here with her work both on the court and in the classroom. We are excited to see what she will do in our program and school now that she will be here on a permanent basis.”
Wawasee is still looking to fill head coaching vacancies for both the boys and girls basketball teams. Girls head coach Kem Zolman stepped down the day after the season ended, and Wiktorowski gave up the boys position shortly after season’s end to cut back on his workload.[[In-content Ad]]
