The Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts present were all students at Syracuse Elementary.
Superintendent Dr. Tom Edington introduced Phil Metcalf, and presented him with the Indiana Vocational Director of the Year Award.[[In-content Ad]]"This award is based upon the career that the individual has had," said Edington. "Knowledge, leadership, and commitment were among the factors that were looked at."
"I'm very honored because I came from mathematics, and grandfathered into this position," Metcalf said. "After nine years, I'm very honored to receive this."
Edington also presented awards to board members Dallas Winchester and George Gilbert. They both received the Tier One Indiana School Board Association Award. This is based on a point system for board members' attendance at meetings.
Metcalf then gave a presentation regarding the school corporation's North Central Association District Accreditation.
"The high school has always been North Central accredited," Metcalf said. "Several years ago, when public law 221 came into being, the state said that if you were accredited regionally by some entity ... that would be part of your accreditation process. Very quickly, the elementary and middle schools came on board. All of the schools in our corporation are North Central accredited, which is one of the criteria you need to be district accredited. This is an advantage ... all of the schools in a corporation can be accredited by district ... they're credited all at once. It's an advantage financially. It puts everyone on the same page, and makes everyone all part of the same process."
Metcalf then went on to present the school corporation's vision and mission statements, which were approved by the board.
The board conducted the third and final reading of the transfer student policy. It was approved, with minor changes, by the board.
Approval was granted for an agreement with the West Noble and Fairfield school corporations, in which the three schools will share the costs of the Wawasee Career Center as follows: Wawasee 60 percent; West Noble and Fairfield, 20 percent each.
In personnel matters, the following individuals were approved for employment: Liana Butcher, fill in for Cheryl VanLaeken during her leave of absence; Christy May-Lawrence, Title 1 highly qualified paraprofessional, North Webster Elementary.
Marcia Ann Engle has submitted her retirement request as a regular bus route driver effective Dec. 31; Sara England has requested leave Dec. 1 through Jan. 5; Amy Wedehase resigned as a paraprofessional at Wawasee Middle School.
In financial matters, the corporation reported the following figures for the month ending Oct. 31:
Beginning balance: $16,167,708.98
Receipts: $8,659,277.98
Disbursements: $3,520,415.89
End balance $21,306,571.07
In other business:
n The board accepted a grant of $6,000 from the Dekko Foundation. This money will be divided equally between Milford and Syracuse schools. This is to be used for arts enhancement, and will help bring the woodwind ensemble of the South Bend Symphony to the schools.
n The new transportation center at WHS is due for completion within three weeks. Staff will move in during Christmas break.
Wawasee School Board members are George Gilbert, Dallas Winchester, Rebecca Linnemeier, Mary Louise Dixon and Mike Wilson.
