Wawasee's Carr Takes First

MISHAWAKA - Warsaw took seventh place and Wawasee 10th place in the Mishawaka Invitational Wrestling Tournament.Ê

Wawasee's Kevin A. Carr was the champion in the 160-pound class.

Carr grabbed his championship with three pins on Tuesday and two hard-fought decisions on Wednesday.

His semifinal match put him against Terry Saylor of Penn. Carr's 7-4 victory took him to the championship round, where he faced last year's state champion, Mishawaka's Brad Harper. The three-period match ended in a 1-1 tie. It took double-overtime for Carr to come out on top by a 2-1 final score for first place.Ê All of Carr's wins and his championship contributed 30 points to Wawasee's team score.

Two Wawasee wrestlers were second-place finishers, J.J. Davis (152) and Jamie Salazar (275). Davis met Warsaw's Matt Zellers in the semifinal round and stayed in control for a 12-9 decision over Zellers. In the championship round, Davis lost a close one (13-12) to Penn's Josh Arnold.Ê

At 275, Salazar defeated Aaron Bogunia of South Bend Riley in his semifinal match (5-2), but in the finals Salazar lost by the same score to Ryan Lee of Michigan City for runnerup honors.

ÊConsolation winners

After his loss to Davis, Zellers came back to beat Riley's Trevor Battles for the second time in the tournament. When they met the day before, Zellers won by a 8-5 count, and in the tournament re-match, Zellers dominated with an 11-2 win. Zellers then defeated Mishawaka's Preston Dodd, also for the second time in the tournament.Ê Earlier Zellers won by an 11-4 decision, and in the consolation final, the victory came by an 8-3 decision.

At 275 pounds, Warsaw's Joey Navarro was pinned (3:36) in the semifinal round by Lee. Navarro came back to win his remaining contests, including a 3-1 decision over Jimtown's Travis Davis and a close 2-1 decision over Riley's Aaron Boguria for third place.

Warsaw's Steve McKinley (215) was upended in 41 seconds by Prairie Heights Aaron Ramey, who went on to take the championship. Meanwhile, McKinley faced a tournament rematch against Mark Hurtt of Jimtown. In Tuesday's meeting, McKinley had bested Hurtt by a 7-1 score, but in the consolation final, Hurtt came out on top in a 5-3 overtime decision.

ÊAlso for Warsaw, Adam Harter (112) took fifth place with an 8-3 decision over Hobart's Ryan Story.

Warsaw coach Tony Boley praised Harter in the team meeting after the match, saying, "That was the best match you have wrestled."

Warsaw's Tim Roe (130) took sixth place, losing his consolation match to South Bend Washington's Tony Heeter.Ê

ÊAt 189 pounds, Wawasee's Craig Jensen took seventh place when he out-pointed Bellmont's Dustin Hormann for the second time in the tournament.

ÊScores for the top 10 teams were as follows: Bellmont 216.5, Hobart 186, Penn 185, LaPorte 149.5, Jimtown 148, Mishawaka 130, Warsaw 119.5, Lowell 117, Goshen 114.5 and Wawasee 106.Ê Bellmont's 30-plus point win was substantial, but the individual tournament champions came from 11 different schools, and no team produced more than two champions.Ê The outstanding individual wrestler for the event was East Chicago Central's Tim Maldonado (140).Ê

Maldonado, whose record is 31-0, pinned all of his opponents in the tournament en route to his championship. He was finally able to upend Rochester's Travis Horn in the third period at 4:35.

ÊWawasee coach Kevin Taylor said, "We had a great day, and all the kids battled really tough.Ê We took three guys to the finals, and Carr upset a returning state champion."Ê

Taylor said he was happy to see three NLC teams among the top 10 finishers.

Boley was pleased with the performance of his wrestlers, and in a talk with the team after the meet Boley declared, "We did good, but we could've done better. We need to step up the intensity for the rest of the season."

Several Tiger wrestlers had asked the coach to push them in practice, and Boley promised that he would do just that.Ê

"We've turned the corner, and we're moving in the right direction," said Boley.Ê

He pointed out that in the Tigers' first appearance at this tourney they finished 24th, then last year they climbed to 10th.Ê This year they hit seventh.

Warsaw is at Plymouth Jan. 7.Ê Wawasee hosts NorthWood Jan. 7.
