GOSHEN — On a perfect autumn day at Goshen’s Ox Bow Park Tuesday, the Wawasee cross country teams ran their way into Saturday’s regional.
Running the opening postseason race under great weather conditions, both the Wawasee boys and girls placed in the top five at the Elkhart Central Sectional, sending them back to Ox Bow Saturday for the 10 a.m. regional.
The top five teams and the top 15 individuals advance to the regional.
In the girls race, No. 9 Northridge was crowned the champion with a score of 24, while Elkhart Memorial (60), Goshen (104), Wawasee (106) and Elkhart Central (117) also advanced.
Northridge also won the boys race, as the 13th-ranked Raiders tallied 30 points, followed by Goshen (52), Wawasee (93), Elkhart Central (117) and Fairfield (168).
Wawasee coach Jerid Stoffel believed his team would compete with Goshen for the third spot in the girls race, and the Lady Warriors did, finishing just two points behind.
“We had several great races,” he said about the girls race. “Jen Slabaugh had a strong finish, she had a really positive race after having a few down ones the past couple weeks. Madison Miller also ran a strong, consistent race and Bre ran another top 10 finish.”
While Northridge’s Olivia Golden took first place in 19:20, Wawasee’s top runner was Robinson, who finished eighth in 20:08.
Also for Wawasee, Slabaugh was 14th (20:41), followed by Courtney Linnemeier (17th, 20:42), Miller (21st, 20:58), Becky Snavely (46th, 23:11), Morgan Eryman (51st, 23:30) and Megan Rhodes (54th, 23:50).
“I was pretty pleased with the girls race,” Stoffel said. “There’s definitely room for improvement.”
With qualifiers from the South Bend Riley Sectional joining the regional, Stoffel knows his girls will need an even stronger showing Saturday.
“Probably, what we ran today isn’t going to get us out of regionals,” he said. “We’re going to have to step it up another level.”
In the boys race, once again a Northridge runner took the top spot, as Blake O’Dell won in 16:12, while Wawasee’s Reid Stichter was fifth in 16:38.
“That’s exactly what the race plan was for Reid,” Stoffel said. “He lost a few positions in the middle, but he had a great race. Adam Doll ran very strong for us tonight. “
Doll had a top 10 finish, placing ninth in 17:01, while other Wawasee places and times were: Zach Cockrill (22nd, 17:31), Austin Yoder (26th, 17:37), Troy Carolus (31st, 17:55), Austin Krizman (32nd, 17:56) and Joey Bornman (36th, 18:11).
“Our pack was a little farther back than we wanted it to be,” Stoffel said.
And like his girls, Stoffel needs his guys to perform better if they have any hopes of getting out of the regional.
“If we run like we did tonight, we won’t get out of regionals,” he said. “But it’s there.”
If his teams could advance out of the regional, then Stoffel would deem this season a success.
“We want the team (to advance),” he said. “That is the goal. All year long, the goal, for me, has been to get both teams to semistate. My guys have been sixth at sectional the past two years, so they were a little nervous about biting the big bullet and reaching semistate, but they did meet their goal of getting out of sectionals.”
