NORTH MANCHESTER - Class 3A No. 7 Wawasee traveled to Manchester Tuesday and scorched the nets in the first quarter for 29 points. The end result was a 70-50 victory over the host Squires.

Manchester scored the first basket of the game, and then Wawasee's Joe Leach took over. Leach hit his first shot, a three pointer, and then made two straight steals, which resulted in two lay-ups. He began and finished a 7-0 run by him self.

"That Leach kid is a one-man wrecking crew. He was hitting the offensive board heavy in this game," Manchester coach Gary Goshert said.

Wawasee's Tylor Trobaugh caught fire and made things even worse for the Squires. Tobaugh scored all 14 of his points in the first quarter. He finished 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range.

"Our press caused some turnovers early, which resulted in some easy baskets to give us the lead in the first quarter," Wawasee coach Phil Mishler said.

Going into the second quarter down 29-16, Manchester began to turn things around. After lighting up the basket in the first, Wawasee was held to nine points in the second stanza, as Manchester cut the lead to 38-24 at the half.

"If Manchester was to get the ball to a half court offense then they would give us trouble. They shot 68 percent from the field in the first half and we shot 52 percent, which slowed us down in the second. We both scored in single digits," Mishler said.

"We didn't handle the press well in the first half and that was the key to playing with Wawasee," Goshert said.

The Squires came out of the locker room determined to make it a game.

Aaron Medley capped a 9-0 run that cut the lead to 38-33 with 5:39 left in the third quarter. Medley scored two baskets along with a free throw after each one.

"I am proud of the way our kids came back to make a game of it. We had some moments were we played as a team," Goshert said.

Wawasee had Leach to stop the run. Again he started things with a three-point shot. The next possession after a Squire turnover he scored on a short jumper to put the Warriors up 43-33. Wawasee never looked back.

"You have to give credit to Coach Goshert and Manchester. They played a heck of a game. Both teams did," Mishler said.

Wawasee pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Squires 19-12, led by Andrew Mock and Lance Zimmerman.

"Our kids learned a lot from this game. They showed they could play with any team at times. We have pretty tough schedule to go through, including the Tree Rivers Conference and Holiday Tournament. We will continue to get better," Goshert said.

Leach led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field. He also had three steals and eight rebounds. Leach shot 3 of 3 from the three-point line.

Tobaugh added 14 points, including his four three pointers. Brandon Geiger and Mock each added 10, while Zimmerman scored nine.

"We won our first three games with our defense. Tonight we did it with our offense. We will have to work on our conditioning a little too," Mishler said.

Daniel Bourne led the Squires with 20 points and five rebounds. David Cable scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and also had six rebounds. Medley added nine points for Manchester.

"With every game we will continue to grow as a team. The boys did a nice job of staying with Wawasee. If we didn't have all of those turnovers in the game we may have pulled it out," Goshert said. "You just can't defend turnovers."

Wawaseee remained unbeaten at 4-0 with the win. Manchester dropped to 3-2.
