SYRACUSE -ÊPeople in New Orleans may have been celebrating Fat Tuesday last night, but people in the Wawasee area were celebrating for a different reason.

The Wawasee boys basketball team caused a stir by upending 4A No. 3 Columbia City 42-36 Tuesday night in Syracuse. The win halted Columbia City's 11-game win streak.

"This was a good victory," said Wawasee coach Phil Mishler after the six-point win. "It feels good to get a win against a team that's that good."

The Warriors jumped ahead of the Eagles early as James Ward netted the first basket of the game.

However, Columbia City answered with a three-point goal from Ryan Briggs and two two-point baskets from Marcus Moore to go up 7-2.

Kory Lantz kept the Warriors close by sinking a three-point basket to make the score 7-5.

After a basket by Columbia City's Doug Sheckler, Lantz and Michael Conrad hit back-to-back baskets to knot the score at 9-all.

Then Sheckler hit a basket and two free throws to restore Columbia City's lead and give the Eagles a 13-10 advantage at the end of the first frame.

Lantz hit the first basket of the second frame to cut Columbia City's lead to one, 13-12.

After a steal and a basket by Scott Moore, the Warriors took control.

Ward hit a basket and a free throw and Austin Kaiser hit four free throws and a three-pointer to put Wawasee up 22-15. Then Austin Gerber grabbed a steal and hit a basket and Ryan Kauchak hit two free throws to round out a 14-0 Warrior run that put Wawasee up 26-15.

Columbia City's Briggs hit a basket at the end of the second frame to make the score 26-17 in Wawasee's favor.

The Warriors held the Eagles to just four points in the entire second quarter on 2-of-9 shooting from the field.

Columbia City found new energy in the third frame as Scott Moore and Briggs netted the first two baskets to cut Wawasee's lead to five, 26-21.

A three-pointer by Lantz stopped the Eagle run, but Scott Moore and Sheckler hit back-to-back baskets to orchestrate another four-point Columbia City run, making the score 29-25 Wawasee.

Lantz stopped the run again, this time with a two-point basket, but Columbia City fought back again. Hugh Howard and Sheckler scored the last two baskets of the quarter to cut the Warrior lead to two, 31-29, going into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles tied the score at 31-all on a basket by Matt Kauffman with 7:13 left in the fourth frame.

Gerber put Wawasee back in the lead with a basket, but Matt Moore sank a three-pointer with 5:35 showing on the clock to give Columbia City its first lead since early in the second quarter, 34-33.

However, that lead was short-lived, thanks to Ward. He hit a free throw to knot the score at 34-all and then he hit a basket to put the Warriors up 36-34 with 2:26 left in regulation.

A steal and basket by Kaiser gave Wawasee a 38-34 advantage at the 2:09 mark.

Sheckler kept the Eagles alive and within two points with a basket with 1:46 left in the fourth, making the score 38-36.

Conrad stepped to the charity stripe with 19.6 ticks left on the clock. He hit two free throws that put the Warriors up by four, 40-36.

Then at the 11.5 second mark, Lantz put the game out of reach by sinking two more free throws and giving the Warriors the 42-36 win.

"Our guys hung in there," said Mishler. "We met them from the get-go. We got some stops and some rebounds. We executed ofensively. I hope we can take this and build on it."

Lantz led all scorers with 14 points, while teammates Kaiser and Ward added nine each.

Sheckler led the Eagles with 12 points, while Marcus Moore and Griggs netted seven each. Scott more finished the night with six points.

The win improves Wawasee's record to 15-4, while Columbia City falls to 18-3 on the season.
