SYRACUSE -ÊThere are many adjectives one could use to describe Wawasee's performance against Angola.

Overpowering comes to mind.

Hyperbole aside, the Warriors took the outmatched Hornets behind the proverbial woodshed and dished out a severe beating, winning 47-7.

"We played hard and with a lot of enthusiasm. We thought we were a better team but we didn't go through the motions," said Wawasee coach Joe Rietveld.

If you fell asleep or left after the first quarter it seemed that Wawasee may have been "going through the motions."

The Warriors' lone first-quarter score came when junior quarterback Kory Lantz found Ben Champoux from 14 yards out. Champoux, who pulls double duty as the place kicker, added the point-after try to make it 7-0 with 6:07 left in the first.

Lantz looked a tad shaky early, throwing passes off the mark. He quickly settled down and made Angola's secondary look just plain bad. Lantz finished the night 14 of 21 with four touchdowns and 129 yards. His lone mistake was an interception deep in Angola territory in the second quarter.

Lantz was quick to erase that small hiccup after Mike Brunner fumbled on Angola's first play after the pick.

Lantz found Champoux once again. This time the wide receiver outran the Hornet defensive backfield from 30 yards out to make the score 20-0.

The effective passing attack was set up by yet another stellar performance by junior running back Jordan Swain. Swain, whose numbers are deceiving because of opposing defenses keying on him, showed Angola the attention was deserved. The 5-foot-10, 205-pound bruiser ran for 72 yards in the first quarter alone and 135 in the first half.

After the game, Wawasee coach Joe Rietveld talked about how the 21 carries Swain had in the first half led to his big time production.

"He's one of those runners who gets better as the game goes on," said Rietveld. "He is the sort of back that excels when he has 15 to 20 carries."

Champoux and the rest of the wide reciever corps aided the run with tough blocks on the edges to clear space for Swain.

"Even though we're known as a passing team our wide receivers number one job is to block for us," said Rietveld. "If our guys can't block they won't play for us."

At halftime Lantz, Swain, Champoux and company "clung" to 34-0 lead. The second half was a chance for junior varsity and freshman kids to play under the Friday night lights. In fact, with mainly a JV squad Wawasee, continued to take it the Hornets. The Warriors played their three backup quarterbacks in the second half.

The fourth quarter saw Wawasee play mostly freshmen.

While it was a love fest in Syracuse Friday night, the mood will quickly turn to quiet determination as East Noble rolls into town.

"They're the number one team in the state," said Rietveld. "They're big. They're fast. It's going to be a thrill for them to come and play at our place."

Wawasee now moves to 7-3 on the season and will host East Noble at 7 p.m. on Friday.
