Wawasee Softball Team Leads Roundup With Convincing Win

After downing Lakeland 3-2 in LaGrange Monday, the Wawasee Lady Warriors dominated West Noble 22-9 in Ligonier Tuesday night.
In the five-inning game, Danielle Gunkel was the winning pitcher, going three innings, while also going 3 for 3 at the plate, scoring three runs.
Meghan Fretz also had three hits for Wawasee, which accounted for four RBIs, while Ale Brito was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and four runs scored.
The 2-0 Lady Warriors host Elkhart Central Thursday night.

At Lakeland Tuesday, the Whitko softball team suffered a 12-9 loss. Trailing 9-6 going into the seventh, Whitko plated three runs to tie the game, but Lakeland responded with three of its own in the bottom of the frame, winning the game. Aly Nicodemus got the loss inside the circle, striking out eight, while also going 3 for 4 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Whitko will be at Bluffton for a three-team competition, April 12.

Gage Fannin got the win on the mound, while Brett Carson was 2 for 3 at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs and Kurtis Liston scored two runs, going 2 for 3 with a triple. The 1-0 Warriors host Wabash today.

In defeat, Whitko’s Abby Marshall did pick up a win at No. 1 singles, defeating Haley Teel 6-0, 6-1. The Whitko Lady Wildcats are off until their Three Rivers Conference match at Northfield, April 17.

The Whitko girls track and field team posted a commanding 78-49 Three Rivers Conference win at Wabash Tuesday night. Kaitlyn Reed had three first-place finishes on the night, winning the high jump (5-2.5), 200 (28.2) and 100 (13.1). Also picking up individual wins for the Lady Wildcats were Elaine Warner (long jump, 15-3), Sydney Sims (pole vault, 6-6), Brigit Nemitz (1600, 5:50.50) and Michelle Kelsey (13:25.6). The Lady Wildcats return to action April 17 at Rochester.
