Wawasee Recognizes Student Achievements

SYRACUSE - Wawasee School Board recognized accomplishments of several students, and honored several of the district's retiring teachers, during the school board meeting Tuesday.

The board presented certificates to the Wawasee High School Academic Super Bowl Social Studies Team: Cassady Palmer, Cody Paul, Brandon Cox and Krista Bornman. They are coached by board member Mary Louise Dixon.[[In-content Ad]]Angie Beer, Class of 2008 valedictorian, and Hannah Warstler, Class of 2008 salutatorian, also were honored by the board.

The WHS Super Mileage Car Team, organized by industrial technologies teacher Allen Coblentz, received special recognition from the board. The Super Mileage team project is to design and build a car that can extend gas mileage.

"This year, we received fourth place at 917 miles per gallon," Coblentz said. "It was a pretty good showing. There were about 45 to 50 schools entered in the competition.

"I really appreciate the community's involvement in this project. We had about 50 companies and individuals who sponsored us, either through financial donations, or material, or time. This is fully covered by our class."

The board presented plaques to several teachers retiring from the district after many years of service, including: Susan K. Cockburn, 28 years; Cheryl A. Conroy, 23 years; Jerry L. Lambert, 40 years; Richard W. Roose, 39 years; Joseph Hal Trout, 25 years; Jeanette L. Wood, 24 years; Martha S. Yeager, 31 years; Robert C. Cockburn, 36 years; and Sharon Sigler, 33 years.

In other personnel matters, the board accepted the resignations of the following individuals: Amanda Tonegel, Wawasee Middle School half-time social studies teacher; Regina Miller, WHS school cafeteria worker; Sherry Weisser, cafeteria worker; Kariann Yotter, Syracuse School Title 1 paraprofessional; and Traci Henn, Syracuse School title 1 paraprofessional.

The board approved the following individuals for employment: Mariah Roberts, part-time agriculture teacher, WHS; Christopher Dykhuisen, school psychologist intern.

Emily Hike, WMS special needs teacher, has requested a leave of absence Aug. 20 through Oct. 3.

Several personnel transfers were also presented to the board.

The board also approved two-year coaching contracts for Kem Zolman as the WHS head girls basketball coach; Tom Wogomon as the WHS head football coach, and Phil Mishler as the head boys basketball coach.

Mary Hurley, WHS athletic director, presented the board with a list of items costing more than $500 that were purchased by the athletic department. This is in accordance with district policy stating that purchased items exceeding $500 need board approval.

Purchases made for the athletic department, since the last report June 2007, are: Eagle 5000 Air Purifier for $747; competition cheer floor for $2,500; backstop/jox box, $1,330.55; EcoQuest Air Purifier for $1,000; tennis fence slats for $7,600; wrestling floor pads for protection for $1,260; five-man soccer wall for $1,309; two treatment tables for $1,114.46; and microbial protection for $2,472.

In other financial matters, the board approved the financial report for the month ending May 31, 2008:

Begin balance, $13,472,291.45

Receipts, $2,320,983.27

Disbursements, $2,825,798.94

End balance, $12,967,475.78

The board also announced increases in textbook rental fees for the 2008-2009 school year. Fees are: kindergarten, $83.05; first grade, $111.60; second grade, $114.40; third grade, $120.95; fourth grade, $109.45; and fifth grade, $107.40. Grades 6-12 textbook rental and fees will be based upon each student's class schedules.

In other business:

n New teacher orientation is scheduled for Aug. 5-8. Aug. 18 is the first teacher day.

n Full-day kindergarten registration is Aug. 7.

n The board awarded the contract for gym safety railing work to Advanced Restoration at a cost of $139,000.
