SYRACUSE - Wawasee Community School Corp. will conduct a comprehensive research-based school assessment process using an online survey.

The survey, Keys 2.0, was developed by the National Education Association. It is a research-based, field-tested process that will obtain feedback about Wawasee schools from teachers, support staff, administrators, parents and other stakeholders.

Collecting and analyzing this data will become an important part of the school improvement process, and will allow Wawasee to begin a reflective, problem-solving dialogue that will help enrich and deepen the school improvement plans and efforts.

Research demonstrates that instruction and teacher quality account for about 50 percent of improvements in students' performance. The other 50 percent is directly related to communication, decision-making processes and coordinated efforts - the concepts Keys measures.

Parents and community members should take the survey for a particular school in the district. The survey takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete online, but does not have to be completed in a single sitting. By saving responses and writing down the randomly generated password to use upon return, a person will be able to return to where they left off in the survey. Individual responses are anonymous. The survey can be completed at home, at the public library on the dates listed below for each school.

A computer lab will be open in each building from 3 to 7 p.m. during the upcoming parent-teacher conferences for parents and community members to come in and complete the survey.

Dates for the conferences are Monday, Wawasee High School, and Feb 7 for Milford, North Webster, Syracuse and Wawasee Middle Schools.

The survey can be accessed online any time between Monday and Feb. 9. Go to www.keysonline.org, click on "Take the Survey". Type in the school name or zip code, and choose the school for which you want to take the survey.

Zip codes for the schools are 46542 for Milford, 46555 for North Webster, 46567 for Syracuse, 46567 for Wawasee Middle School and 46567 for Wawasee High School.

Once the survey has been administered, responses are compiled and analyzed by computer, yielding objective data on 42 indicators of school quality that have been empirically correlated with student achievement.

These indicators are divided into six categories: shared understanding and commitment to high goals; open communication and collaborative problem solving; continuous assessment for teaching and learning; personal and professional learning; resources to support teaching and learning; and curriculum and instruction.

Detailed reports will be provided to the individual schools and the district, and buildings will decide how to use the findings in conjunction with their ongoing school improvement efforts. District level data will be aggregated and used by the Committee for Assessment, Curricula and Teaching as part of the district's improvement efforts.[[In-content Ad]]
