SYRACUSE - After finishing last season one win short of the Class 3A state championship, Wawasee's varsity girls basketball team looked sharp in their season opener against Westview Friday night in Syracuse.

Junior Brennan McAdams scored the first nine points for the third-ranked Warriors en route to a 27-4 lead after the first quarter.[[In-content Ad]]Wawasee turned its early advantage into a convincing 65-29 win.

"This is uncharted waters for me," said Wawasee coach Kem Zolman. "This is my first season coming back from a trip to the state finals. I really didn't know what to expect."

McAdams finised the game 7 of 8 from the field with 18 points. She also had two steals and three rebounds.

"We are a team of scrappers and atheletes," said Zolman. "They came out and played some great defense. The team was banging off the walls to get started. It took us awhile to find the basket, but when we did we took off."

Junior Taylor Goshert scored 21 points in the game, including 13 in the first quarter, to lead all scorers. She also led the team with five steals and contributed with five rebounds.

Wawasee held Westview to nine points in the first half. Westview finished the game with 23 turnovers, 15 of them coming in the first half.

Ashlee Ort contibuted to the scoring cause with 15 points for Wawasee. Ort led the Warriors with six rebounds and also had three steals.

"With the team we have, opposing teams cannot key on one player," said Zolman. "We have multiple weapons that can step up and hurt you in other areas. We are always looking for key players to step up when we need them".

Westview outscored Wawasee 10-8 in the fourth quarter 10-8, but the damage had already been done, and the host Warriors walked away with a 36-point win.

"We have talked a liitle about last year," said Zolman. "Last year is last year and we are starting a new season. This year we have to forget about last year and develop our own idenity as a team."

Zolman went on to say, "I really didn't know how we were going to come out tonight. You just never know if there is deep disappointment or resentment coming off a year as we did last year. I am proud of the way they came out tonight."

Tiffany Fisher finished with 13 points for Westview. Jordan Slabach added seven points in the loss.

Wawasee held Westview to 9-of-30 shooting from the field. Westview scored 10 points from the free throw line, finishing 10 of 16 from the charity stripe.

"It is good to get the first game out of the way," said Zolman. "Now we can concentrate on getting better and forming our own idenity."

Wawasee is in action again Tuesday when it hosts Lakeland. Westview is at Elkhart Memorial tonight.
