Anderson and Aaron Voirol also doubled to lead a 17-hit attack for the Warriors.
While not totally shocked at his team’s offensive production, Wawasee head coach Brent Doty wasn’t expecting quite the numbers the Warriors had on Tuesday.
“I think we have a lot of potential. Top-to-bottom, one-through-nine, I’d put us up against anybody. Then off the bench I think we’re deep offensively,” Doty said.
“I didn’t expect us to come out and score 19; I don’t think you ever do. But I do think we have the potential to put up some runs this year as long as they continue to have good at-bats and continue to make strides.”
The Warriors used three different pitchers to secure the win. Aaron Voirol threw the first two innings and gave up a pair of runs. He was followed by Sam Rookstool, who gave up five of the Bruin runs, and Shorthill. Rookstool was credited with the win.
Doty kept the pitchers on a bit of a short leash, as the team hasn’t been outside much and Tuesday’s game was the first of three in as many days. He said he was pleased with the mental make-up of his hurlers.
“They’re a good offensive team; they showed quite a bit putting up some runs in the middle innings,” Doty said. “A lot of our guys don’t have varsity experience. We lost a lot to graduation last year.
“But I have to give it to the pitchers; they came in and battled, didn’t get down after giving up a hit or two here, a run or two there. They did labor a little bit, and threw more pitches than I wanted them to for a couple of them, but in the end they battled and worked through it.
“Luckily, the weather broke for us so we could get outside a couple of times. But this is just a microcosm of what the season is going to be like, with three game in three days. It might not always be that strenuous, but we have a couple of stretches where we play five in six days or five in seven, and we gotta get used to that.
“Our goals are to win (the Northern Lakes Conference) and win sectional, and it’s going to take those things where you gotta play back-to-back. We just need to shore up a couple of things and hopefully we’ll continue to get offensive production.”
Wawasee will travel to Wabash for a game tonight, then go to Manchester on Thursday before spring break. Both contests are scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
