Wawasee Netters Fall To Central Noble

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

SYRACUSE – Central Noble came in as an improved tennis team, according to Wawasee head coach Shane Staley, and proved it with a 4-1 win over the Lady Warriors Wednesday night.
Wawasee senior Chelsea Carolus was the lone winner for the home team, winning in straight sets at No. 3 singles over Maggie Kiser.
Thanatcha “Nealy” Thanasrivanitchai, a senior exchange student from Thailand, nearly won her match with Erin Maneke. After dropping the opening set 6-4, Thanasrivanitchai came back to win the second set 6-3.
With all the other matches ending in straight sets, and the Cougar team victory secure, both sides agreed to a tiebreaker to decide the match. Maneke took the tiebreaker 10-7.
In the junior varsity competition, the Cougars won all five sets contested, and no Wawasee player won more than one game in any match.
“(Central Noble) came in and was a lot better than they’ve been in past years. We have a lot to learn, especially on the (junior varsity) side of things,”
Staley said. “Eight of our nine that played (Tuesday against Lakeland) had never played the sport of tennis up until we started practicing.
“Varsity-wise, there’s a lot of things we need to take from this, and get better. They played hard, they’re working on a very early season, and we’re focusing before the (Northern Lakes Conference) season starts on getting a lot better; focusing on what we need to work on. There’s a lot of lobs and passing shots that we’re not hitting for our doubles teams that I’m concerned with, and we need to get back out on the court and practice with. We’ll take it one game at a time and go from there.”
Wawasee, now 1-1 on the year, won’t have another match until April 14 when it travels to Emma to take on Westview. With many players headed out of town for spring break, Staley said his team would have voluntary practices next week.
“We’ll do what we can, but, unfortunately, some of my doubles are split up and some are going on spring break and some are staying here,” he said. “I really want to work on some of the doubles and work on solidifying them as a team within the team. We’ll work on some things during spring break and work on picking up momentum the best we can.”
