Wawasee, Manchester Fall Short In Bids For Sectional Titles

LIGONIER – After being down by 15 in the third quarter, Wawasee’s comeback bid fell just short in the sectional final to NorthWood, 53-48.
Gage Reinhard closed out his career with 21 points, and Aaron classmate Aaron Voirol finished with 16. Dakiyron Fox had 19 and Vinny Miranda 16 points for NorthWood.
 Wawasee finished its season at 13-12, the Warriors’ first winning season since 2011. NorthWood, 22-2, advances to the Blackford regional in Hartford City, where they will take on Columbia City at noon Saturday.

Saturday in Converse
Chase Fierstos had 32 points to lead three Squires in double figures, but it wasn’t enough to take Manchester to its first sectional title in 20 years. The Squires fell to host Oak Hill 67-63 in double overtime.
Chainey Zolman added 14 points and David McAtee 11 for Manchester.
After falling behind by six points at the end of the first quarter, Manchester came back to lead by one at halftime. The Squires trailed by one at the end of three quarters before tying the game by the end of regulation.
The Squires finish the season at 17-8, and have a winning record for the second consecutive season. The last time Manchester had back-to-back winning campaigns was at the end of the 2001 and 2002 seasons. They are still looking for their first sectional title since 1995.

Saturday in Syracuse
SYRACUSE – Wawasee freshman Reagan Atwood qualified for the gymnastics regional at Huntington North by finishing second in the all-around at the Wawasee Sectional Saturday.
Warsaw’s Jazzmine Brown also advanced, finishing fifth in the uneven bars. Brown finished eighth overall.
The top three teams and top six individuals advance in each event.
The Lady Warriors just missed qualifying for the March 14 regional, finishing fourth with 98.375 points in the team standings. East Noble was third with 100.900. Elkhart Central was the sectional champion with 103.750 points and DeKalb was the runner-up with 101.825.
Warsaw was ninth in the team standings, with 72.600 points.

The Lady Tiger track and field team started off its 2015 season with strong efforts at two different venues. On Friday, nine throwers traveled to Portage and all threw personal best efforts with Emily Bailey winning the open division of the shot put with a toss of 33 feet, 1.75 inches.
On Saturday, Warsaw competed at Indiana Wesleyan University and were led by top-three finishers Allison Miller, second in the 3,200 meter run and Samantha Alexander, third in the long jump.
The 4x400 replay team of Nicole Eckert, Kenzie Merchant, Audrey Rich and Tennie Worrell finished first, and the 4x200 relay team of Mariah Harter, Alexander, Abbi Curtis and Audrey Rich finished second.
The 4x800 relay team of Hannah Dawson, Charlene Orr, Claire Kehler and Allison Miller finished third.
The top 24 athletes and relay teams qualify for the Hoosier State Relays indoor meet on the Purdue campus in West Lafayette on March 21. Others who qualified were Carlene Orr and Lauren Orr in the 3200, Abbie Curtis in the long jump, Alexie Day in the 60-meter hurdles and the high jump, Harter and Shunterra Davis in the 60-meter dash, and the distance medley relay team of Claire Kehler, Hannah Dawson, Lauren Orr and Mia Beckham.[[In-content Ad]]
