Wawasee Honors Teachers, Gets Updates On Construction Projects

SYRACUSE - The Wawasee Community School Corporation honored two retiring teachers, and heard a comprehensive update on summer construction projects during their July board meeting.

Phil and Karilyn Metcalf, who between them have 76 years of teaching experience, were honored with a presentation by Superintendent Dr. Tom Edington. The Metcalfs were unable to attend the last board meeting when other retirees from the corporation were honored. Both received plaques and the thanks of the entire board.[[In-content Ad]]Scott Gulley of Performance Services, Inc., the company overseeing various construction and renovation projects for the corporation, presented a detailed rundown of what work is being done and when completion can be expected.

According to Gulley, the following Wawasee School Corporation facilities are in these stages of completion:

Wawasee Middle School - Lighting upgrade and switching work is approximately 70 percent complete; roofing project is on schedule and is approximately 60 percent complete; new chiller has arrived and is scheduled to be started July 31; pool dehumidification unit is tentatively scheduled to ship Aug. 15. This should be installed and finished a week ahead of the Sept. 30 deadline.

Syracuse Elementary School - Lighting upgrade and switching work is complete; plan to have classroom work complete by July 24 and cooling on July 27, about a week ahead of schedule; the ADA restroom upgrade should be complete by Aug. 4.

Wawasee High School - Lighting upgrade and switching work is approximately 70 percent complete; plan to have Unit B 2nd floor classroom work complete by July 24 and cooling July 27, a week ahead of schedule; new electrical switchgear has been set and cutover for the new power should be Friday; work in media center and main office is scheduled to be completed by July 31 for student orientation; the domestic water system piping is being replaced and water will be back on in the building by July 24.

Milford Elementary School - The domestic water heater is on site and is currently being piped and should be complete by July 31; temperature control work, relief fans, and variable speed drive work is scheduled to start next week and will be complete by Aug. 10.

North Webster Elementary School - Temperature control work, relief fans, and variable speed drive work is scheduled to start next week and will be complete by August 10.

Vocational building - Plumbing and electrical rough-ins are complete; new addition floor is poured and is 70 percent complete; new addition roof deck will be complete by Thursday; new rooftop units will be set this week; new block walls for new offices are built and stairs should be set by end of this week; plan to start painting the interior classrooms and west end of building by end of next week; restrooms will be functional by start of school; science casework, computer workstations, west parking lot paving work, and some finishes will not be complete by start of school.

In personnel matters, the board approved the following individuals for employment with the corporation: Liana Butcher as 4th grade teacher at Milford; Amanda Cabaniss for the Vocational Family and Consumer Sciences position at WHS; Alan Frank as a temporary ASE teacher for 2009-2010 school year; Carrie Johnson as 3rd grade teacher at Milford; Matthew Pulley as elementary music teacher at North Webster Elementary; Debra Baum as new GED instructor for fall semester adult classes; Jennifer Cassel as temporary Educational Diagnostician; Ashley Justice as temporary part-time math teacher at WHS; Lauren Richard as WHS business teacher; Phil Metcalf will be employed on a part-time basis (up to 35 days) throughout the coming 2009-2010 school year; Brooke Riddle as speech and language technician; Johnnie Fick full-time special needs paraprofessional at WHS; Rick Vester as WMS head custodian; Mary Jane Ploszek as full-time secretary/receptionist at WHS.

The board also accepted the resignations of the following individuals: Pauline Bruch, retiring as secretary/receptionist at WHS; Stephanie Hufford as half-day Reading Recovery teacher at Milford; Kortney Gray as WHS FACS teacher; Polly White as WHS business teacher; Robert Holzheuer as WHS special education teacher; and Miranda Ford as WHS language arts teacher.

Due to a licensing requirements change, Kim Gillihan will no longer fill the post of speech and language therapist.

In financial matters, there will be changes in the cost of textbooks for the following grades:

Kindergarten $88.75 for 2009-2010 ($83.05, 2008-2009)

Grade one $116.25 ($111.60)

Grade two $121.35 ($114.40)

Grade three $128.15 ($120.95)

Grade four, decrease to $107.75 from $109.45

Grade five, decrease to $104.05 from $107.40

Grades 6-12 textbook rental and fees will be based upon each student's class schedule.

A discussion on the Qualified School Construction Bonds Application was conducted by Superintendent Edington.

These bonds are limited to $2,000,000, and when the bond is sold, the intended project for must be completed. There is a 15-year payback time frame, with no interest over the length of the bond.

This is part of the federal stimulus program and is administered through the state. Wawasee applied for three such bonds for work on the high school roof, for heating and air conditioning units and for renovation of ventilator units at Wawasee Middle School. The only bond application that was accepted was for the Middle School project. Approval is pending at this time.

The board accepted a donation from the K-21 Foundation for a ball field at Milford. This would be the third such sports field at Milford and an exact location has yet to be determined. Edington was unsure of exact amount of the donation but said it was in excess of $50,000.

n Monday, Aug. 3, was announced as the first day of school.
