Bob Lahrman, facilities director for the school, said that block walls for the parts room, wash bay and maintenance area have been completed. The steel workers have most of the structure for the mezzanine floor completed, but had to remove the steel from the office of the ground maintenance shop because the outside vertical steel was too short.[[In-content Ad]]Lahrman said that concrete work is on schedule, and site prep workers are expected to have rock work finished within two weeks. The workers will install the needed top layer at that time. The mechanical contractor has most of the fabricating done, and temporary power has been run to the building.
"The target date for the school's sewer and water work to be done is Sept. 1," Lahrman said. "Due to the short steel, the completion date ranges from Nov. 1 to Dec. 1. December first is the worst-case scenario."
The board approved a donation of $3,000 to the Teen Parents Succeeding program. This is a program designed to keep students who have become parents in school. This past school year, there were five senior girls in the program, all of whom graduated. Four of these students have enrolled in college classes.
Superintendent Dr. Tom Edington reported that total enrollment numbers are not yet available, but will be posted by the middle of September. Full-day kindergarten enrollment was down compared to what was initially expected.
Edington reported he recently learned that all public schools in the state are now required to have a private lactation area available for nursing mothers. Whenever possible, a cold storage area for milk also should be provided. These are now required by state law.
In personnel matters, the board approved the hiring of the following individuals: Jeff Spicher, ISTEP remediation paraprofessional, Wawasee High School; Sara Harrison, temporary one-to-one coach, WHS; Jarod Kingery, social studies teacher, WHS; Scott Schermerhorn, physical education/health teacher, Milford School; and Valerie Leininger, temporary third-grade teacher, Syracuse Elementary.
Jaimi Andrew transferred from being a half-time Reading Recovery teacher to a half-day kindergarten teacher at Milford School. Brandy Ward transferred from a three-hour cafeteria worker to a 6.75-hour cafeteria worker position at WHS.
In financial matters, the report for the month ending July 31, is as follows:
Beginning balance:
$20,545,107.57
Receipts:
$2,033,487.58
Disbursements:
$4,271,462.96
End balance:
$18,307,132.19
Wawasee School Board members are Dallas Winchester, George Gilbert, Becky Linnemeier, Mary Louis Dixon and Mike Wilson.
