Wawasee Handles Tax Warrants, Personnel Issues

SYRACUSE - The Wawasee Community School Board held its June meeting a week later than normal, and used this session to discuss authorizing tax anticipation warrants, and to handle several personnel matters.

Under the notice of the sale of warrants, the school district will make one or more temporary loans to meet current expenses for the use of the general fund, the transportation fund, the debt service fund, the capital projects fund and the pension debt service fund.[[In-content Ad]]Loans are not to exceed the following amounts for the respective funds: General fund $10,424,825; transportation fund $1,460125; debt service 43,528,938; capital projects 43,394,625; pension debt service $676,740. All above mentioned amounts mature either June 29, Dec. 31, or a date fixed by reference to issuer's receipt.

Such loans have a per annum rate not to exceed 6.5 percent (the exact rate to be determined by negotiation with the Indiana Bond Bank) subject also to following their due date to an alternate rate provided in purchase agreement.

In other financial matters, the financial report for the Wawasee School Corporation for the month ending May 31, 2007 is as follows:

Beginning bal. $14,109,099

Receipts $3,071,853

Disbursements $2,448,897

End Balance $14,732,055.

The Wawasee High School Athletic Department presented their financial summary for the 2006-2007 year as well. The following totals represent all athletic accounts, as well as administrative costs, concessions, and various miscellaneous programs.

Disbursements $339,057

Receipts $331,345.28

Certificates of

deposit-total $58,000

Grand total

with certificates $63,545.81

The board also approved the athletic department to make single item extra-curricular purchases more than $500. This is an annual agreement is made once a year between the board and the department to help expedite handling of business for all sports programs.

The board accepted donations from the Milford PTO in the amount of $1,081.35 in books and $1,760 in cash.

Textbook rental fees for the 2007-2008 school year for kindergarten through fifth grade were announced. All grade levels include a $1 increase in insurance. There were no large increases in fees because the district plans to adopt reading and language arts materials as one next year.

The new fees, as well as the 2006-2007 fees for comparison, are as follows:

Grades 6 through 12 textbook rental fees are based on each student's individual class schedule.

In personnel matters, the Wawasee Community School Corporation hired Richard Kline as Interim Superintendent, effective July 13 through the remainder of the calendar year. He will be paid $25 per day for an average of three days per week until the end of the year.

Administrative contract extensions were also approved by the board.This is an annual procedure which extends the contracts of all building principals.

The board also approved a motion to make the data technician permanent. The position will be paid for with money from the capital projects fund and is part of the school system's overall technology program.

Also, Wade Wirebaugh, hardware and software technician, will be given a raise. His salary will increase from $38,729.66 per year to $41,729.66 per year.

The following support personnel have resigned their positions: Donna Daniel, effective June 14; Judy Longcor, effective at end of school year; Marie Hiney, effective June 4.

Support personnel hires are as follows:Becca Snider, temporary mental health therapist; Diana Hauser, cafeteria worker; Debbie Kyle, second shift custodian; Amy Timmerman-Sheehan, special needs paraprofessional.

The following certified personnel have resigned: Valery Ahrens, effective at end of school year; Rachel Noble, effective end of summer session; Michael Campbell, end of 2006-2007 school year; Julie Bell, end of 2006-2007 school year; and Sara Lake, effective end of 2006-2007 school year.

Certified personnel hires are as follows: Nancy Nelson, fall semester adult education GED; Karen Petro, speech and language pathologist at North Webster; Christie Holst, fifth grade at Milford School; Gina Bordones, third grade, Milford; Timothy Koontz, WHS resource teacher; Jarid Stoffel, part-time language arts; Tifani Beer, WHS language arts; Miranda Ford, language arts at WHS; Geoffrey Walmer, WHS mMath; Danielle Blair, family and consumer sciences; Donna Dawes 1/2 day second grade and 1/2 day reading recovery at Syracuse School.

The following certified personnel have requested leaves: Amanda Tonagel; Dawn Yoder; Tonya Temple; Colleen Kryder; and Karen Green.

Two year coaching contracts for Kem Zolman as the WHS head girls basketball coach; Tom Wogomon as the WHS head football coach; and Phil Mishler as the head boys basketball coach.
