Tallying a season-high in points, the Lady Warriors dispatched the Lions 95.5-79.25 Thursday night at home, improving to 2-2 on the year.[[In-content Ad]]"It's our highest score so far, so I'm thrilled," Wawasee coach Nika Prather said. "We were missing a few of our key contributors. Darian Conard was out of the lineup, and she's one of my top performers on all the events. Sarah Rozow was only competing on the bars, and she's one of my top beam people. And Tori Coble, the freshman, was also out."
Wawasee was also without the services of sophomore Erin Hostetler, but senior Kelsey Kaiser stepped up to win the all-around competition with 32.7 points.
Kaiser seemed to impress even herself with the score, as she won on vault (8.9), bars (7.65) and floor (8.75).
"Her best events are normally the beam and bars," Prather said of Kaiser, who took fifth on the beam. "She scored the highest on floor and vault. I know the 8.9 is a personal best on the vault. She nailed that."
With her latest performance, Prather is hopeful that Kaiser will have a renewed confidence in performing on the vault and floor exercise in weeks to come. That mentality would be much more beneficial than thinking she can only perform well in a couple of events.
"She's thinking, 'I can do this. I am good at those events.' Girls do get a mentality of 'I'm good on this, but not on that,'" Prather said. "This a big ego-booster."
Leo's Brittanie Barker placed second in the all-around with 30.9 points, followed by Wawasee junior Allison Angel (30.9) and senior Stephanie Kuhn (30.5).
Barker catapulted herself up the all-around scoring by winning the beam with 8.1 points.
The beam proved to be Wawasee's low point of the night, as the Warriors struggled to keep their balance.
"We didn't have anybody stay on," Prather said. "Nobody stayed on. We didn't have a lot of falls per gymnast, which is good. But falls add up. That's what brought us down. We should have been two points higher if it hadn't been for the beam."
Despite the beam, Prather seemed excited about how her short-handed team competed, and hopes it continues Tuesday at Warsaw.
"I'm hoping, when we're at Warsaw, we can do just as well," she said. "We'll probably have the same girls out, but I don't know yet."
The meet at Warsaw will begin at 6:30 p.m.
