SYRACUSE - Like any other sport at Wawasee and Warsaw High Schools, the gymnastics teams at these respective schools are rivals.

A green and gold sign hanging in the auxiliary gym at Wawasee High School has each year they've won a gymnastics sectional championship painted on it. Dating back to 1973 there are six years missing, most recently 1998, the year they lost to Warsaw.

Last night the Warriors avenged a loss to the Tigers with a 91.85-90.9 victory that moved their record to 4-0. Warsaw falls to 2-2 on the season.

"It's exciting," said Wawasee coach Nika Prather of the number of sectional championships. "But it's very stressful. I came here in 1987 and was an assistant for seven years and with that tradition came pressure. Total, I think I have a 126-20 record. I'm not good at losing and losing to Warsaw last year was tough. One of our goals this year was to beat Warsaw and to win sectionals. It bothers me there's no '98 up there."

Wawasee's Angie Beer took first place in three of the four events good enough for a victory in the all around competition. Beer's point of excellence last night, her beam score of 9.1.

"That's an excellent score," said Prather. "But she could get even better. That's a good score but not for her, she could've gotten five-tenths higher."

Warsaw's lone first place came in the floor excercises with Jillian Letsch's score of 8.45. The Tigers placed second in two of four events, Callie Edgington in the beam as well as the bars. Edgington also placed second in the all around competition, but Warsaw coach Amanda Campbell saw room for improvement.

"This was definately not our best team performance," said Campbell. "Heather Hyde wasn't in competition and we had trouble in all our events. We did not perform to our potential."

Warsaw (2-2) will be in competition Thursday at 6 p.m. when they travel to Huntington North. Wawasee (4-0) will be home Thursday vs. Angola and Lakeland.
