FRANKLIN -ÊFloyd Central won the big prize, but Wawasee made some noise.
Floyd Central came back from 16 strokes down after the first round to capture the 70th Annual Indiana High School Boys State Finals crown at the Legends of Indiana Golf Course Wednesday with a score of 594.
Columbus North and Terre Haute South finished in a tie for second place with a score of 605.
Wawasee, who squeaked into the second day of competition, finished sixth with a two-day total of 612.
Warrior senior Andy Wolf finished third overall as an individual with two rounds of 70 to finish four under par.
Michigan City's Anthony Novak finished first with a six-under par 138. Delta's Chase Wright finished second with a 139.
Wawasee finished in a three-way tie for seventh place with a score of 320 to make it to Wednesday's final round.
The Warriors shot the fourth-best score of the day as they finished the tournament with a round of 16-over par.
Wolf's Wednesday round was only bested by Novak and Wright.
Wolf double bogeyed the par-3 seventh and finished the day with two bogeys and five birdies.
Wolf nailed a putt on the final hole Tuesday that allowed Wawasee to advance to Wednesday's play.
Wolf's classmate Andy Custer finished his high school career with a two-day total of 166. Custer's score was dropped.
Youth was served for Wawasee as freshmen Curtis Coverstone and Michael Jenkins had solid rounds.
Coverstone, the son of Warrior coach Steve Coverstone, shot five-over par on day one and three over Wednesday.
Jenkins finished 20 over for the tournament and had one birdie Wednesday on the par-4 14th.
Sophomore Jordan Dawes struggled on the first day with an 83 but stormed back Wednesday to finish with a 75.
"Our goal was to make the top four," said coach Coverstone. "We ended up sixth. I am so proud of the guys. There is no class, divisions in golf so we were sixth out of everbody. Andy Wolf was unbelievable. I didn't think that we'd ever have anyone finish third individually in state. That is a tremendous accomplishment."
The Warriors' sixth-place finish is the highest for Wawasee since 2003 when the Northern Lakes Conference school earned a fourth-place finish led by Stephen Conrad.
Kosciusko County has had a team place sixth or better for the past six years. Last year Warsaw won the state title and finished third in 2004.
Wawasee finished fourth in 2002 as well as 2003.
The Tigers failed to advance as a team but Warsaw's Grant Slater finished tied for 14th as an individual.
After shooting a 69 on day one, Slater shot a 79 as the course played much tougher on day two.
Outside of Floyd Central, no team shot better on day two than it did on day one.
Slater finished in third place last year as he helped lead the Tigers to its first team title in any sport since 1991. [[In-content Ad]]
