NORTH MANCHESTER - Confidence, Wawasee girls tennis coach Cindy Peterson said Thursday afternoon, is built on winning.

Reeling from a loss to Northern Lakes Conference foe Concord, and heading into a critical stretch of the conference season next week with Northridge, No. 4 Warsaw and Goshen, the Warriors boosted their confidence with a 5-0 win Thursday afternoon at Manchester.

Wawasee picked up the third team point of the match and the win in right at an hour - about the same amount of time it took the Warriors by bus to get from Syracuse to North Manchester on S.R. 13.

"We're coming off a loss to Concord and we have three big NLC matches with Northridge, Warsaw and Goshen coming up," Peterson said. "We came to play and we came to win. Confidence is built on winning. We got our confidence back."

The win improved Wawasee to 4-2 on the season, while Manchester, which picked up its first win of the season Wednesday against rival Northfield, fell to 1-5.

"Wawasee is a great team," Manchester coach Mark Heiden said. "They're in our sectional, so we knew coming in it would be a tough match. I'm happy with the way we played. We came out and battled. We only have one senior and one junior on the varsity team, we're mostly freshmen and sophomores."

In the last match to finish, the only match to go three sets, the Warrior duo of Cara Windle and Krista Van Lue edged Squires Aletta Vermuellen and Brittany Denney 6-7, 7-5, 6-1.

"I'm pleased with the way our No. 2 doubles team played," Heiden said. "They battled. We knew this would be a tough match, and the kids didn't give up."

The first team point recorded, Warrior senior Kate Murphy handled Manchester freshman Courtney Ingold 6-2, 6-0, followed by another Warrior when at No. 1 doubles, where senior Ashley Ganz and sophomore Alison Kropf took care of junior Concetta DeFusco and sophomore Kessie Karg 6-3, 6-1.

At No. 3 singles, the match that officially gave the Warriors the win, Wawasee sophomore Kendra Ganz handled Squire sophomore Abbey Keffaber 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 1 singles, Warrior sophomore Carly Murphy downed Squire senior Bri Foster 6-2, 6-0.

"I was impressed with Manchester's No. 1 singles player," Peterson said. "Carly was really dominating. I walked away and came back and the Manchester girl was really playing hard. She's a good little player."

The Squires are in action again Monday when they host conference foe Rochester, while Wawasee plays Northridge Tuesday, No. 4 Warsaw Thursday and Goshen Friday.
