SYRACUSE -ÊDespite 12 first-quarter turnovers and 30 percent shooting from the field, Wawasee was able to lock visiting Lakeland down defensively en route to a 40-33 win in girls basketball Tuesday night.

The Warriors got off to a slow start as they telegraphed passes and Lakeland's Abby Neff stepped in to the passing lanes four times to score six first-quarter points as the Lakers jumped out to a 12-5 lead after one period.

Wawasee ratcheted up its defensive pressure to outscore Lakeland 11-3 in the second quarter. The Lakers didn't make a field goal until 1:53 left in the half when Sammy Jo Simon nailed a jumper to tie the game at 15-15.

The Warriors entered the half with a one-point lead at 16-15 after junior Jessie Wolf hit one of two free throws.

Both teams played fairly even in the third quarter as both teams struggled with their touch from the floor.

Wawasee showed how potentially deep it could be with five different players scoring in the third quarter.

And besides center Tiffany Fick, everyone on the Wawasee roster is an underclassmen.

Wawasee head coach Kem Zolman started sophomore Kayln Lantz and junior Megan Walker at guards, with Shawn Knafel, Fick and Wolf in the frontcourt.

But a trio of freshmen saw extended action Tuesday night.

Guard Taylor Goshert, who began her high school career with 16 points, struggled from the field but did have a balanced game finishing with six points, five rebounds and four steals.

Fellow freshman Brennan McAdams saw time and was intregal in helping break Lakeland's press.

McAdams scored three points while pulling down seven boards.

The third freshman, Kylee Ort, saw action in the second half after playing most of the junior varsity game. Ort scored just one point but did pull down five rebounds.

The Warriors outrebounded Lakeland 33-21.

Wawasee also had a distinct advantage in the free throw department. The Warriors drew 24 fouls on the Lakers and got to the charity stripe 33 times. Lakeland made just 4 of 10 free throws.

Leading the way for the Warriors was Fick, who scored 11 points and was 9 of 15 from the free throw line.

Wolf chipped in eight points while Lantz had six.

Lantz helped the Warriors after going coast-to-coast with three minutes left in regulation to spark a 7-0 run and give Wawasee the lead for good.

Lakeland was led by Neff's 10 points and six steals to go with five rebounds. Brittney Batemen scored seven points and has six rebounds before fouling out. Simon also fouled out Tuesday.

The Warriors, 2-0 on the season, are in action Saturday at Fairfield for a 7:45 p.m. tipoff.
