GOSHEN - In the second semifinal of the Bethany Christian Sectional Thursday, the host Lady Bruins and Wawasee Lady Warriors felt compelled to top the night's first semifinal.

After watching the Warsaw girls soccer team win via penalty kicks in Game 1, Wawasee and Bethany also went to a penalty-kick shootout, only they needed sudden death.[[In-content Ad]]Once the dust settled, and 10 girls from each side had taken a penalty kick, it was the Lady Bruins who advanced to Saturday's 7 p.m. championship match with a 3-2 victory.

"You hate to see a game end like this, because I think it should always be decided on the field," Bethany coach Dennis Yoder said. "I give credit to Wawasee. They played really well. I'm just really proud of my girls, because they didn't give up."

Tied at 2-2 after a pair of seven-minute overtime periods, the girls went into the shootout, which ended with a 3-3 tie after the first five girls from each team shot.

In sudden death, Bethany's first four girls all missed their attempts, but Wawasee couldn't capitalize, missing as well, with all four being shot to the goalkeeper's right.

Bethany's fifth sudden death shooter, sophomore Anna Nafziger, put the ball in the upper right-hand corner of the goal, putting the pressure on Wawasee, but the Warriors last shot went.

"We knew we didn't have girls with the consistency needed in PKs," Wawasee coach Dodd Cunningham said. "It was good that they were confident in themselves and stepped up there to take them, but we knew it wasn't our strong suit. We really needed to finish the game in regulation."

Neither team looked too strong in the shootout, which saw Bethany make four of their 10 attempts and Wawasee make three of 10.

"We practice PKs a lot, and I just don't understand why they were missing," Yoder said. "I don't know if it was nerves or seeing parents and fans over there. I think that had a little bit to do with it, because in practice, there's nobody there and there's nobody yelling."

Bethany now gets another shot at Warsaw Saturday. On Sept. 29 in Warsaw, the Tigers defeated the Bruins 3-1.

"We were caught off-guard and some of my players were coming off being sick," Yoder said about the match. "I think it will be a really good match, and I'm looking forward to it. Warsaw's going to be good."

Against Wawasee, Bethany struck early when junior Sharisse Yoder scored on a free kick from 25 yards out with 27:49 remaining the first half.

"We just weren't prepared," Cunningham said about the first goal of the game. "The girls weren't prepared very well. They didn't have a wall going. We had a two-person wall with holes in it."

Late in the half, Wawasee sophomore Mallory Rondeau tied things up off an assist from junior Haley Cunningham with 3:50 remaining.

The goal was Rondeau's 22nd of the season, and Yoder was well aware of her, having coached her as a part of FC Indiana U16 and U17 travel teams.

"She is strong and I was just telling my defenders to stay on her and don't let her turn at all," Yoder said. "I knew we were going to have our hands full with her, and I knew we were going to have to shut her down. If we could shut her down, and contain everyone else, I thought we'd have a good shot at winning the game."

Bethany broke the tie two minutes and four seconds into the second half when Emma Gerig scored by getting the ball into the upper, right-hand corner.

Eighteen minutes later, Wawasee caught a break when a shot off the foot of senior Cassandra DeGood deflected off the head of Bethany sophomore Malaina Holloday and went into the goal, tying things at 2-2 with 19:16 to play.

"It didn't rattle them," Yoder said about the goal's effect on his girls. "They stayed in there and kept fighting. That's what we keep preaching to them - never give up."

Neither team gave up, but someone did have to lose.

"We played well at times. Our game was up and down," Cunningham said. "I think our fitness became a bit of an issue towards the end of the game, especially in the overtime. We were dragging a little. We were back, and not really pushing forward. But, they played a really good game. Unfortunately, we should have won it in regulation, and not had to get to this point."
