SYRACUSE - Every year, the Wawasee Community School Corp. Board of School Trustees receives an athletic financial report.

This year, director of finance Jim Evans said athletic director Mary Hurley is comfortable with the status of that department. Board member Marion Acton said he appreciates receiving the report every year and was glad the athletic department is still in the black. With approximately 20 athletic programs offered at Wawasee, that means many students are involved, Acton said.

Jeff Wells, board member, said at the Tuesday night meeting that he is glad Hurley was able to tuck away some money during good financial years to save for the possible coming leaner years.

According to the report, most of the operating funds of the department come through gate ticket receipts. Other sizable amounts also are generated from the Warrior Open and concessions.

The largest grouping of expenses within the department continues to be for equipment needs, and for this year was more than $83,000. The Wawasee Athletic Department handled more than $335,000 in and out of the account throughout the year.

As of June 18, the department also has $70,000 in certificates of deposit and $17,006.91 available to begin operation in the fall.

In a comparison of gate revenues for the last six years, Green and Gold revenues for 2001-02 were $23,963, up from $20,245 in 2000-01 and from $14,632 in 1999-2000. Green and Gold tickets are available for students, senior citizens and adults. These tickets provide admission to all Warrior events, except tournaments, and show a savings over single gate prices.

Baseball revenue was down to $1,987 this year, compared to $2,591 in 2000-01.

Boys basketball season tickets for 2001-02 brought in only $745 in revenue, compared to $1,317 in 2000-01, but gate tickets brought in $15,532.50, down approximately $6.

For girls basketball season tickets, revenue for 2001-02 was $5,456, up from $699 in 2000-01 and $598 in 1999-2000. Gate tickets for girls basketball brought in revenue of $38,871.50, up from $31,891.15 in 2000-01 and $23,734 in 1999-2000. During the 1996-97 season, $2,698 in revenue was brought in for girls basketball gate tickets.

For football, season tickets totaled $828 in revenue and $18,646 in gate tickets. In 2000-01, season tickets brought in revenue of $472, while gate brought in $26,600.

Of the 18 sports with gate revenues, total revenue for 2001-02 is $119,148, up from $114,352.08 in 2000-01; $95,009.75 in 1999-2000; and $88,728 in 1998-99.

Other revenues for 2001-02 totaled $2,887.22 from programs, $11,415 from concessions and $15,629.10 from the Warrior Open.

Wawasee offers six other sports that do not have gate revenues, including boys and girls cross country, golf and tennis. Gate prices have remained the same for the last four years. The athletic department does have additional income from IHSAA tournament shares and physical exam night.

According to the report, football and girls and boys basketball are the revenue draws that support the balance of the athletic program at Wawasee. If Green and Gold tickets are removed from the gate figures, those three athletic programs account for 73 percent of all athletic gate revenue.

In her report, Hurley said she expects total revenue for 2002-03 to drop. While football and boys basketball gates should increase, the All-Sport Green and Gold ticket and girls basketball sales are expected to drop "measurably." Every other area should remain fairly constant. [[In-content Ad]]
