SYRACUSE -ÊFriday night's football game at Wawasee between the Warriors and the visiting Goshen Redskins meant different things for different teams.
For Wawasee, it was an opportunity to finish the season with a winning record and bounce back from a string of tough losses, which included two in overtime.
For the Northern Lakes Conference champion Redskins it was very simple, a win meant finishing the season with a perfect 9-0 record.
That is exactly what the Redskins did as they showed the Warriors why they are ranked No. 9 in 5A with a convincing 29-13 win on homecoming night at Warrior Field.
The Warriors came out strong and showed no intention of being intimidated by Goshen's record or ranking.
Wawasee took the opening kickoff, and with a combination of passing and running, put together six first downs as they marched 70 yards downfield to take a 6-0 lead.
Sophomore quarterback Kory Lantz completed his first three passes on the drive and carried it in himself from 1-yard out for the touchdown. Ben Champaux's P.A.T. made the score 7-0 in Wawasee's favor.
Unfortunately for Wawasee, the first string offense only produced one more first down as Goshen's defense took the wakeup call, holding the Warrior offense nearly ineffective for the remainder of the game.
Wawasee finished the night with 217 total yards offensively. Of those 217 yards, 70 came in the opening drive of the game and 80 came on the last drive as Wawasee coach Joe Rietveld went to his second-string offense.
After Wawasee took the 7-0 lead the game belonged to Goshen as the visitors riddled the Wawasee defense with an equally effective blend of passing and rushing.
Wawasee's secondary didn't have an answer the Redskin quarterback Thom Bernheisel consistently found receivers open downfield and Redskin tailback Jay Parker ran for more than 124 yards.
Goshen's offense came back after the Wawasee touchdown and scored on its first four possessions. The Redskins scored two touchdowns and two field goals to take a 19-7 halftime lead.
The Warriors came out in the second half and held Goshen to three plays on its first possession but the Warriors couldn't capitalize when they got the ball back.
After a Wawasee punt, the Redskins put the game out of reach, scoring 10 points on their next two possessions to take a 29-7 lead.
The Warriors got back on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter as Wawasee reserve quarterback Mike Siri took his team 80 yards downfield to make the score 29-13. Siri was 3-for-3 passing on the drive for 49 yards. He also had one carry for 10 yards.
The Goshen win gave Wawasee a record of 4-5 for the regular season and a 2-5 record in the tough NLC. Goshen finishes the season with a perfect 9-0 record.
The Warriors will travel to Concord Friday in for the first round of sectional play, while the Redskins go to Michigan City. Kickoff for both games is 7:30 pm. [[In-content Ad]]
